Default PETA

Hope this isn't old news. Saw it in the Louisiana paper today.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants Gov. Kathleen Blanco to make the state fish off-limits to fishermen.

The official state freshwater fish is the sac-au-lait, which is a white crappie, also called a white perch by some.

According to PETA, fish are intelligent animals that feel pain.

"We want to protect white perch in a manner appropriate to a state symbol -- ensuring that they don't suffer needlessly at the hands of anglers," the organization said.

The governor, who is an avid duck hunter, forwarded the letter to the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries for a response.

Although my first response to PETA was laughter, they are actually quite dangerous.... They've caused a lot of trouble in Europe and England. Pay attention to their nonsense and remember what they're trying to do is influence folks that don't fish, will never fish, but might be persuaded to vote their way...

Ask a fox hunter in England about these kinds of repetitive media manipulations. I'm sure they laughed for years until one day their lawmakers actually banned fox hunting.... The so-called "greens" in Germany have actually gotten laws passed telling anglers how to handle their fish....

PETA needs to be publicly rebuked at every turn, with responses in the media to counteract their claims at every opportunity.

I wholeheartedly agree that PETA is dead on saying that there is "room for all God's creatures."

Right next to the mashed potatoes and corn!

What gets me is the fact that the PETA demonstrators will throw paint on some woman's fur coat, then go get into their car with leather seats, and drive over to the diner for a hamberger or steak. The people are complete idiots.

I work in Norfolk, Va and drive past Peta HQ every day on my way to work. I sort of understand where they are coming from sometimes.... i.e. protesting circuses that use animals... but keeping an animal caged for most of its life is totally different than hooking and fighting a fish for 30 seconds. My reaction to them is probably similar to most... when I am told not to do something, that is usually what I am going to do...

They also go to schools and feed our kids with this mindless garbage. I have a 9yr and 8yr*old*nephews who had a visit*from the PETA*on school time to discuss why fishing is wrong.*I*got such a drilling from*em on one of our trips last year. They had fun catching fish but I could see one of em had a tinge of guilt every time we put one in the cooler...but don't worry he ate em just fine that night and went again next day. But I can't help wonder about the other kids in that school who don't have someone to take em fishing.

Along these same lines, watch the kids cartoons on a Saturday morning. There are all kinds of messages being delivered there. What ever happened to watching Wiley Coyote blow himself up with ACME TNT rocket jet roller skates?

Animals have two purposes: to taste good and to fit well.

Heard that somewhere, probably form a recovering PETA supporter.

No disrespect intended, but I completely disagree that they (PETA) are better funded and I think you are dead wrong there. They (PETA) are just much more "in your face" about how they get their point across.

So, my curiousity got the best of me - that PETA might be better funded overall than the NRA, CCA, Ducks Unlimited and other wildlife/conservation charities? I have always thought the NRA was the single biggest with Ducks Unlimited and I just did a quick peek at Ducks Unlimited financial review as well as PETA's and here's what I found..

PETA - $26 Million
DU - $46.5 Million

I know NRA will be even higher than DU.. Again, it's in the delivery...

nice work reelwork on the research. i am sorry, a little busy yesterday. when i say "us" i meant recreational fishers. i absolutely shouldve clarified that. and to my understanding, the NRA is the best funded rec group out there. the point i was trying to make, however lamely, was that without grassroot support and the dollars to follow through, we will be fighting against a very strong and well funded green lobby that want to not restrict our fishing, but stop our fishing. mpa's are in the wind and i think we need to band together meet the challenge head on instead of hoping that its too outrageous of an idea, ie that it cant happen "here". now if the nra wanted to take up this fight with us, i dont see how that could be a bad idea. We need to know how the funds are being used. I bet that DU uses a lot of the funds for the enviroment*while the PETA spends all their money one changing the public and politicians views.*

P.S. I belive NY*state is considering the*"freedom to fish act". If you live or fish in NY you might want to find out about it and support it.*

I don't have too much faith in Mrs. Blanco as gov. She ran as "THE SPORTSMAN'S GOV" yet she has the power to veto the open loop LNG terminals and hasn't flexed any muscle yet. I watched an interview were she talked about loving fishing for redfish and speckled trout in the marshes of SW LA. If that's true wouldn't she veto the open loop LNG's? At least we passed an ammendment last year giving the right for every Louisiana resident to hunt, trap and fish!

On the plus side Mrs. Blanco is drumming up some support for saving "America's Wetland". In my opinion this should be priority number 1. F*** teachers pay issues , roads, etc. If we don't have land to live on what are shools and new roads worth?
