Default star rods avet reels

What do you think of star 16-30lb standuprods with avet lx 4to1s.Spooled with 50-60 lb spectra.Should take about 500yds.I was thinking of this combo for very light tackle off shore fishing.Do you think the drags will hold up?

this is embarassing. i went looking for the specs on the lx and could not find the max drag at strike for this reel. from the one's that i've tinkered with in the past, i think it will hit 12# of drag at strike before losing free spool. that would make a 30# reel, not a 40#. also, sorry about missing this post for so long.

I think they pull 16 lbs. Then the next option would be ex 4/01.they pull 25 lbs.Or even 4/01s on penn mariner 660 30lb to 80 lb rods.

Alan,

I hope you are mistaken.* I just bought 2 Avet LX's and put them on a Star 20 - 50 Aerials.* I have seen posted (ETackle, Cabbage Key) the they will pull 16 pounds.* I too wanted to use them for SBFT and big Stripers....sort of a cross over rod.

I am going to have to go play with them now....and find out.* They have no line on them.* But I was planning on putting Power Pro 50....

yeah, gotta be careful. at one point i was hearing that the 4/0 ex series would reach 25#'s at strike. unfortunately it was only 18#'s. the 25# reference was at "full." hey, "fulled you," right? needless to say, i was not pleased when i actually had a reel in hand.

The Avet LX and JX will get about 9-11lb at strike and 16lbs at full with full freespool.

They're built for 30lb line.

Alan and John,

Got it.** I think we were talking past each other.* I was talking about Max of 16 pounds.* You both were talking about 9 -11 pounds at Strike not Max*

I have since read your post how you measure drag....at strike.*

So here is my question, Did I buy a reel that can provide more drag than a Penn 113H? ...if not, I am not happy.

thanks, john, and i hope wer're both wrong. guys, it's important. there are lots of subjective things that sway a person to purchase one reel versus another. with lever drags in particular, we have to talk "apples and apples." it's so important to know the max drag at strike before losing freespool. it's also important to know the drag at full so that the two are not confused. and just to make sure that no one's cheating, you have to know the spin time in freespool when the preset knob is cranked down this far, just to make sure that no one is cheating. these are objective, hard numbers, and can't be fudged.

I don't think you're going to be happy if that's what you need. I just bought my first LX as well so I'm no expert on it's capabilities, but I don't think it can be hammered tight like a senator can.

50# spectra and a 40# topshot, right? so you're looking for 10-13#'s of drag at strike with good freespool. let's just get it spooled and see. remember, you have to run the line through the guides and then measure the drag by pulling back on the rod. the guides will give you a pound of resistence all by themselves. also, even if you don't get perfect freespool, the freespool that you do get might be good enough for the type of fishing you do. let's not write off this ree just yet. let us know what kind of numbers you get. zat ok?

Well.... Its cryin time! The avet LX is not going to have as much drag as a 113h. How do I know? I tried it. On fish on a wreck.

But, here's what you will get. A beautiful machined aluminum smooth running lever drag reel that you can load up with 30lb, great free spool, and that casts. I have never even tried to cast a 113h. Too heavy, Wrong application.

So if you troll, the lever drag lets you get back to your strike drag quick and easy, with no fiddlin with the star.

I am going to bust up charlie cobia, sammy snapper, doris dolphin, kipper kingfish, and maybe even toss some live bait at tommy tarpon. I have two mounted on 7' soft tip penn power sticks, spooled with 30lb mono, and they have nice feel and balance.

I may even get courageous and take up Alan Tani's suggestion to greas the drags, who know's.

Hope this helped.

Oh yes, I have the same star standup rods as you also! The balance seems nice with them too.

Now that i am totaly confused.16 lbs total is good for 50 lb spectra?is there a rule of thumb for how much drag is necessary for a given fish size?I wanted to use this setup for realy light tackle offshore action.

Why do you want to load it with 50lb line?

Well I thought about it some more and did a little more home work.* I am more comfortable with my decision.* I really wanted a lever drag.* That was my primary objective.* I also wanted a crossover reel that could be used for light offshore (BFT to 100 pounds) and would not be too much for stripers in shore.*

I compared the Avet to the TLD 25.* (the other reel I was considering) It seems that they are about the same at Strike and Max drag.* The Avet has less capacity, but plenty if you use super braid.* As was suggested here and else where, the Avet will hopefully hold up better than the TLD 25 because it is Aluminum.

I assumed the Avet had more drag than the 113....but you know what happens when you assume....lesson learned.

Taking the 16 pound max drag spec (I won't get a chance to*string them and test them myself*for about a month) and multiplying that by 3 (or 33%) it gives you 48 pound maximum test line that the reel should be matched with.* I matched them up with a good deal on a 20 - 50 pound rod.* The maximums (reel drag, line stregth, rod rating) all seem to come together around 50 pounds.....*

I thought about going with the 30 - 80 rod, but decided that this set up would be used inshore 90% of the time, I would go lighter on the rod (but stay within the spec'd range).* I could also go lighter on the Spectra, but I actually want the thicker line.* If I get 400 yards of spectra, that should be enough to stop SBFT's and hugely overkill for any striper.* The thicker line is a little safer for rookies to use* (cutting fingers).

So other than my lesson about my 113, I am comfortable with the purchase.* I'll let everyone know what I think after I get that first cow of the year...which we up here have switch from measuring in "months away" to measuring in "weeks away"....soon measuring in "days away"....

Let me know about the 100 lb BFT. I think you have some pain coming to you!

I think you'll dig using the reels, I know I will.

Good Luck!
