Heading out tomorrow morning (Sunday). Looking for advise or tips for tuna or sharks. May fish for sharks for first time ever. Should be interesting. Already assume I will be cutting line when fish is within fifty feet of boat
Anyway I'll post tommorow or Monday if we actually catch any.
I don't have any advise for you but I do have a story. A friend of mine went out last week to the tire reef off of Barneget (about 4 miles off). He just put his pole in the water (fishing for fluke), when his entire boat got bumped. He looked down, and saw a 15 foot Thrasher shark hit his boat. The sharks tail come up and just missed his head but split his pole into 2 pieces....Anyway good luck with your trip, let me know how you do with the trip. I also boat out of Waretown.
I also fish out of Waretown (Longkey Marina), and love to shark and tuna fish. E-mail me and we'll chat if you like.
Well...empty fishbox, but still nice to be on the water.
Spoke to baitshop guy (honest guy, no I'm not kidding) he suggested the spots I planned on hitting and a few others a little farther out, twenty five fathom line. We (I) decided I could not stand to sit for six to eight hours and wait for Jaws to arrive. So we trolled for six to eight hours instead. Spent $200 on fuel, ring free, 2 cycle, food and ice. Caught six bluefish by mistake. Had two people tell me where the fish were. Learned one was honest but I was too far away. Second guy just liked me to get more frustrated I guess.
Some day I will get the patience to set up a chum line and catch a big shark but for now I'll stick to what I know and love doing...trolling and perhaps catching.
By the way your friend probably s*it his pants, I know I would of.
We heard numerous reports from the Tom's and Lindy area of Bluefin, Yellowfin and Dolphin...
I would bet they will also be in the Fingers region soooooon. Water temps were 68, clean blue water... If the weather is right I'll be rocking and trolling next weeekend...
Marliniti,
Sounds like I was a day late. Yes the water looked great Sunday also. Chance we'll be out there as well, Sunday (finally last game of little leage baseball this Saturday). If you are out Sunday give me a shout on 65 "KimberlyRyan".
I heard from a friend who fished the Wilmington on Tuesday that all they caught ALL DAY was a small dolphin and a tiny tuna. D'Oh!
Meanwhile, boats fishing north at the Toms were loading up on longfin up to 16 a boat. D'Oh! D'Oh!

p.s. the latest satshot from Rutgers shows nice warm water all over but no significant temp breaks as of yet. Maybe something will develop by Satdy.

Tuna hang around temp breaks because bait hang around temp breaks, and bait hang there because of differences in current between the two temps of water. You can trace the trophic level all the way down to plankton....
Catch-all...remember the rutgers sea temps are very deceiving because they are currently picking up water vapor in the humid air, and it looks like the water is warmer than it is. Just pay attention to the shots early in the morning. also the surface of the water can rise from 3-5 or maybe more degrees as the day goes on...but 10 ft down the water basically stays the same, it can sometimes make it look like a nice break, but it really isn't.

Justin - thanks for the heads up but I already knew that trick. I prefer the seatemps shot at late night for an even truer picture of the temps.
It seems like the latest Rutgers shots show pretty much uniform temps all over with no dramatic temp breaks. Guess I have to dust off my Rolodex and start calling bait shop guys I know from Manasquan down to Indian River. Real PITA but usually reliable.
Heard of a great BFT bite at the Dawg today from early a.m to about 11am.

we had a few decent fish south of there last weekend (one a 115lb YFT, yes, there are some YFTs there..), plan on doing the same this this weekend...we will be there on sunday, probably nicer weather, plan on spending the night way off shore (1200fa) for a big mako, then moving in to get the early tuna bite, best plan on starting to fish by sun up...after that there are too many people and the fish just sound...give me a call on the sunny skies, ch71 or 69...

Anybody got any updates and/or confirmation of schoolie Tuna at the 28 mi wreck, 750 sq, Cigar?
Heard they were coming up into the sharker's chumslicks 6/14-16, haven't heard anything since. Thinking this stretch of hot weather might bring 'em inshore anytime now.
yes, there have been a few small small schoolie BFTs caught inshore, but i only heard of a few keepers (>27")
Catchall....yes, the weather sounds wonderful for saturday night, but i wouldn't reccomend chunking for the tunas...it will be almost pointless right now, especially with the lack of YFTs around. We are heading to the 1000-1200 line outside the poormans and are going to setup for sharks...come in an anchor up at 4am for the early tuna bite, and probably chunk it until noon. I haven;t heard of any decent size BFTs north of the hotdog, and areas further south have a little more fish than the dog.
good luck this weekend!

Overnighted at the hot dog on saturday night. Before dark we landed a nice 80lb BFT that took a whole butter on the bottom. Then we set up for shark at night...around 1AM i started chunking very heavy to finish off some old butters, and the short line went off. Set the hook and knew i was into something other than a shark...finally got the fish to the boat after almost dumping our 80, and it was a huge BFT! It hit a foot long live squid on a wire shark rig! After another hour of heavy chunking all thre rods went off, 2 of the fish dropped the bait, and we hooked up on another large BFT that continued to strip our 80 with 25lbs of drag in no time. The fish settled down and the line suddenly went slack...the line was clean cut well abover the leader...i am guessing another fish swam by and broke it off. The morning bite was decent as we had 4 solid hookups and the same thing happened...i could see the school of fish right below the boat, and we just kept getting cut off by other fish. Total was 2 BFTs one weighed in at 80 even, the other was 72" and 210lbs...and 1 mahi. Sorry for the long report, but it was a decent trip! Justin Sunny Skies
I fished the Hotdog Sunday. Parked at the SW corner. 125ft. We were setup just before first light and within a few minutes we were hooked up. After a 25-30 minute battle we put a 90lb BFT in the box. Had another break off about 10 minutes later.
Then by 7am or so, it turned off.
We sat and fed them butter chunks for a couple hours and got a 5 lb mahi on a butter chunk.
Maybe 1/2 hour later we got another hookup and shortly after put a nice 60-65lb YFT in the box.
Another 1/2hr and another 40-45lb YFT in the box.
And finally another 20-30 minutes and another 40-45lb YFT in the box. We called it a day and made the run back to Cape May. The seas were absolutely gorgeous both ways. You could run as fast as you wanted.
The BFT was full, STUFFED actually with butter chunks, and the YFT had butter chunks as well as sand eels in their bellies.
Fished the Glory Hole Sunday 6/30 from 7am to 12. Calm Seas, No wind Great day for a tan. Saw a Huge Whale and several schools of porpoise.
Lots of debris... 2X10's everywhere on the NW side. Trolled cedars, feathers, squid daisey chain, squid spoon +++.....
No tuna ... had big knockdown on a cedar... Boated 1 Mahi on the squid daisey.
Tuna Man... Scott I gave you sa shout a couple of times. . . but you must have been out of range.
Marlin, I did not get out this past weekend. Am planning on going to the Canyon early Sunday. Not sure if we're going to the Hudson, Tom's or Lindy. Have to see what others reccommend.
Sorry you could not find the fish, maybe this will be our weekend. Let me know if you or anyone else on this site are heading out this weekend, I'd love to share information. Could save us all a lot of fuel.
I am actually considering the Elephant Trunk or the 28 Mile Wreck but I am afraid the bluefin may have already departed.
jetmech - how far a run is the Hot Dog from Cape May? It's a little far for me from home, been thinking abput overnighting in Cape May or OC MD on a Friday before heading to the happy hunting grounds on a Saturday AM.
