Where we fished saturday I think the snapper were there. We got the one 20# and my wife lost one just as big to the rig and I then preceded to do the same. Then for some reason we couldn't keep the boat out of the rig so we moved to the other side, but the fish weren't there or if they were weren't biting. I think we could have caught a few more if we stayed where we were.
We didn't come across any AJ's or Ling. Only tried jigging with diamond jigs though, no live bait. At another rig we got some dog snapper up to the top, but after we got one in the boat the sharks moved in and that was all we could get into after that.
I think i'll stay on the porch with Blue this weekend...
I hope you like a long ride to the blue stuff Wm. Nothing but green water all the way to Horn Mountain. We gave up and headed on to Venice Sunday. Had to run to Mars to find blue water. There was a nice rip about 3 miles south and curved around to Ursa. Lots of Dolphin, but the tuna were very shy. Longliners are working the area to the north of Mars also.
wouldnt be the first time i ran 125nm for bluewater.... actually may go way east..talked to a buddy who said they had bluewater pushing west on a line ne of ram towards the steps.
cgrand, that looks like dinner We did not hit any storms on Sunday. I was tracking some poppers on radar that were moving along Chandaluer, so we stayed east until they moved on.
I have heard from other folks that Sunday was not too impressive. "the boys" are fishing the tournament this weekend, and going long for tuna, etc. I get to stay home . They will hit port eads tonight and head long in the morning. I think Bluemarlins info is good - with the dual upper-level lows we have, and one being in the mid gulf, there should be a strong push from the SE, even though the prevailing winds in our area are from the SW now. Some shadetree oceanography on my part, well - semi-shadetree
Keep the reports coming, I may be able to blast out late next week.....
LIke Bob said earlier... green water.. albiet clear deep green... all the way to horn mountian... HUGE HUGE grass lines about 10 west of the ram today... tons of bait but decided to run to Horn Mountain. the grass islands are massive.. and when the bite turns on there it will be crazy... stayed at horn Mountain 3 hours.. tuna jumping EVERYWHERE... but typical summer crap... wouldnt take a trolled bait ...switched to live bait... NADA.. nothing... I suspect nite time is the ticket there. flat calm with no wind everywhere offshore.... dodged a few boomers from sunrise till 8am.. but it was and excellent day... picked up several nice 30-35# AJ's on the way in ... all in all coulda been worse... oh we did see a huge bluemarlin free jumping about 4 miles north of Horn Mountain ... quite a show.
Yeah I just meant tough fishing wise. Just about any day on the boat is a good day. I stayed in port all weekend, too many storms around for me. Saw on the news last nite a nice tuna that was caught in the tournament out of the President.
Its not the first time I have watched tuna skyrocket with little success..... the storms offshore really werent that bad.... we pushed out behind the line... the ran a little sw of course to get around it.... dodged a few but never have anything over 2' all day hell dead calm much of the day....coming home didnt even see a storm......
Sorry for the late report. Ran from Venice to Mars picked up hardtails on the way. Which was a complete waste of time. We were on the Mars rig about 9:00pm with tuna busting everywhere. Tried ever bait known. Finally boated one 25# Blackfin on a Popper. Headed to Ursa about midnight, lots a tuna. The tuna were chasing flying fish as far as we could see but wouldn't touch anything else. After hours of dispare we finally borrowed a dip net from another MS boat, caught some flyers and drifted them back on a circle hook. It took all of 2 minutes before the first hook-up. As soon as daylight broke the bite was OVER!
Poppers! My brother and crew were also fishing Ursa on Fri/Sat. The tuna were busting everywhere, and they boated 8 nice schoolies (55 lb range). Used heavy spinning outfits (40 lb test) w/poppers. Fished 'em like speckled trout!!! Like Dragoon said, lots of flying fish action. Seemed the poppers made enough racket to fool the tuna. They fell a bit short for the tournament in tuna, but did cash in on a cobia. They also caught a few big cow dolphin.
I agree with Bluemarlin, even when you run long and may not catch much, just being out there is more than worth it.
