Default Montauk Sportfishing Report 9/1/03

September 1, 2003

In case you’re wondering where this report was last week; there was none. I was a little tied up
with a couple of things and just plain got lazy. Now I’m sitting here shivering and wondering
where the summer went.

The tuna fishing is starting to show a little life (finally!). There are some bluefins hanging out
around 14520/43790, and even biting. It got started on Saturday, and as of today, they’re still
there, which is not the way things have been going for most of the season so far. Fish have been
taken trolling and diamond jigging, but today (Monday) the jigs were definitely the way to go.

Shark fishing is still pretty good. The number of makos being caught is down, but the number of
giant bluesharks (747’s) is up. For a while just about every boat that was chumming for sharks
was also likely to catch a mahi as well, but that seems to be about over for this year.

Inshore for a while there was some pretty hot fluke fishing for the doormats on the south side.
Most of the action was at Gurney’s and west, as far as Amagansett, but it seems like most of the
big fish have been culled out. Now you have to do a lot of throwing back, but you can still catch
some decent fish if you stick it out.

Striped bass fishing has been a little delicate lately. The big fish that were around for a while are
apparently no longer here, and everything being caught are regulars. Trolling and chunking are
both working, but the bait fishing is definitely less reliable.

The falsies are here, or at least somewhere around here. I don’t know that you can count on
finding them, and even if you do, they are not very cooperative yet. Give it a week or so though
and I’m sure we’ll see an improvement. I think the lousy weather we’re supposed to get this
week will most likely get things started.

If you would like to have these reports sent to you directly, just drop me a note at
