Default 1 ST Blue Marlin for the Hawkeye.

Fished out of Hatteras on 7/1. Went to the 230 rock and fish to the N where we left a bite the day before. About 8:30 on the 26857/40274 line in 400' of water a 400 lb blue marlin get on a blue/white islander/balyhoo. Had the fish within 50' of the boat in about 30 min but could not get him closer for another 30 min. Had hand on the swivel 1 time then he went deep, spent another 5 hrs of tug of war to find the fish tail wraped and dead. Huge bummer for us. Had no intention of keeping it. This was my 1st blue marlin. Think I like the sails and whites better. Not nearly as stressfull. The new/old boat Hawkeye, 1970 Formula 233, seems to be good for the bills as I have 4 now in 2 years with only about 15 trips under its belt.

Great job Hawkeye. It truly is a shame to see it come up dead though. Gotta love those Islanders. My favorite is a black and red run off a flatline behind a natural color squid daisy chain. Absolutely deadly!!!!

Keep the reports coming! Are you fishing the White Marlin Open out of O.C.?

Very nice fish! I know how you feel about killing one.... I had a sail die on me last year. I posted a report and got all kinds of greif for killing it, even though I tried to revive to for half an hour! Good to see there are some level heads on this board...
Congrats!

Thats to bad he had to get wrapped ...but what are you going to do.

What did you end up doing with the fish???
mounting, smoked etc...

Naturally you dont go looking for this fish for meat but for sport....a friend had one come in dead and had it smoked .... It was very tasty!!

Hawkeye...
Mucho congrats...What rod-reel-line combo are you running?
I'll echo the bit about it coming up still...but, the tail/bill will make quite a prize huh! Sad consolation, but quite the conversation piece.

I was using my 17 year old 9/0 set up. 900h Dawia with 80lb sufix line, penn standup 50/100 lb rod, and blue/white islander/balyhoo on 300 lb mono.

Well done Hawkeye!

No need to apologise for the odd kept fish - if we start that we might as well give the game away IMHO.

No one these days sets out to harm a fish but it occasionally happens - is unavoidable and as long as someone ends up eating it - what difference between a marlin or a striper?...they are all fish in the ocean to be "managed within sustainable yeild" - each is as important as the other in the role it plays within it's ecosystem, so why differentiate between keeping say a striper or a marlin - it's all relevant.

Sure is a nice lookin fish...

Again congrats & cheers!.

Congrats on the fish there Hawk. Did you get many jumps out of her or did she just dog it out? Congrats again.

It tailwalked for about 200 yrds from about 2 seconds within the 1st min of hook up and one 6' cleared leap about 30' from the boat. Too bad camera was not ready but all hands were busy. No other jumps. Being tail wraped he wanted to stay down.
