Caught one in the Pungo River last August. What's the earliest time to have a chance at them?
What's the best method.....we were anchored.
Kinda boring until we hooked up.

we fish the mouth of the neuse from july thru august. 20 ft of water and use fresh spot if you can catch them and fish just like you are drum fishing. you will also catch drum during this.

Thanks OB1, Do you fish above or below the free ferry? Do you know if anyone has any luck sight casting for them? I might be in the Pungo area again at the end of July.

zeb, we fish brandt shoal, the betsy, and that general area.you can see them rolling but they usually will not hit. we are going to try live baiting this year. these fish are 100lb plus and when you get one on, hold on. we use bouy on our anchor line and when he hits, quick release, and go with her.

OB1, we fished the exact way you described. We hooked 2 last year, only counted one as a catch. The first was too green at the boat and broke the line. Approx. 150#. The second, we fought for about 45 min. Had him next to the boat for about 10 min. but never boated the rascal. I grabbed him by the lower lip and he proceeded to try and rip my arm off. We wanted to get him aboard for a good photo op. They are some kinda slicky. The line finally gave up and he was gone. He was by far the biggest fish I've ever had my hands on.
