Press Release

ACCSP ADVISORS NEEDED

The Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (MarineFisheries) is soliciting applications from individuals who would like to participate as advisors to the Atlantic Coastal Cooperative Statistics Program (ACCSP). The mission of the ACCSP is to become a cooperative state-federal program to design, implement and conduct marine fisheries statistics data collection programs and to integrate those data into a single data management system that will meet the needs of fisheries managers, scientists and fishermen.

Two advisory positions are open: one for the commercial sector and one for the recreational sector. Applicants should be affiliated with some form of activity within the relative sectors (i.e. commercial fisherman/dealer or recreational fisherman/charter boat captain). In addition, there is an opening for an alternate to the commercial advisor. Alternates participate if the Advisor is unable to attend any of the two meetings per year.

The program design is almost complete and the ACCSP is entering into the implementation stage with many southern states already participating and several New England states coming on line this year. MarineFisheries expects to begin using some of the ACCSP system and standards as early as this fall. There are generally two, multi-day meetings per year of the Committee. The fist meeting of this year is tentatively scheduled for mid-March.

Anyone interested in becoming an ACCSP Advisor should submit a brief description of their qualifications to serve to Melanie Griffin either by mail at the above address, fax (617.626.1509) or email (melanie.griffin@state.ma.us).

PLEASE NOTE: Advisors and Alternates are unpaid volunteers. All travel expenses are fully reimbursed by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, except for meals, which are reimbursed on a per-diem.

For more information on ACCSP, please check their web-site at www.accsp.org.

Phil,

This sounds to me like it would be a great job for someone retired with the same interest as both of us. Gee I wonder if my boss and wife will let me go out the door to do this? I certainly will provide all survey info in an appropriate and timely manner to help our situation.

64,000 dollar question! When is this weather pattern going to break?

Dave

Phil,

I can't wait for this storm and cold weather pattern to break. I was down to the oat yesterday and I actually had some ice orming around the boat for the first time all year. I am in a spot withover 30 ft of water and some current. It is a sad thing to see all of the ice and snow still n the boat. Once this passes, I inted to shovel, de-ice and actually get soap and fresh water on the boat Thursday or Friday. At that point I will need an ambulance as I expect to be in shock after I fill it with diesel for this weekends charter. I am very excited about getiing out and finally putting some large cod and haddock into the fish box. Most of my customers have been very understanding and all are waiting for a break. I will post my fish report Saturday evening if I do get out.

Thanks.

Dave

Dave, I hate to ask but what is the price of diesel at the docks? And whre do you get yours? I usually go to Hewitt's Cove, but I will have to shop a little this year I guess.

Tom,

I usually go to Mystic Marine up between Shipyard Quarters and the Tobin Bridge. I get a little discount being a charterboat and year round customer. Last summer pump prices for diesel were between 1.19 and 1.29 a gallon meaning the best price I had all year was .99. I believe gasoline was around 1.55 and .10 off if Sea Tow Member. It is worth joining Sea Tow just for fuel discount.

I don't know how much you burn but I would consider making trip to town, weekday evening after work when the harbor is quiet to fill up for weekend and save a ferw $$ depending on tank size. If not a large tank it may not be worth it and better off just fueling at homeport.

Dave I have a 320 gallon tank. I paid $1.25 most of last year. I usually wait until I need at least 150 gallons before I fill up which is usually about every 4 trips. Hope this snows goes away soon.

They are now talking 50 degrees for Saturday but windy. Lets hope it is fishable before we are lined up together on the Tobin?

Why are all the weekends lousy weather this year. We have not had a weekend with light winds since November. I had drifts in the cockpit almost 4 ft high. I never knew that tuna door could come in so handy in February in Boston.
