Random Quote: Patty Hearst heard the burst from Roland's Thompson gun, and bought it.
I have an Olympic Dolphin 614 boat reel that has seen better days. I think the bearings are shot; seizes up on the retreive. Does anyone know of a place that would have the parts and works on them? Should I even bother? I have had the reel 30 years but it still looks great, no rust etc. Maybe it's time to let go and get a new Penn Senator. What do you think?
one of my hobbies is fixing old reels. i actually started by buying up the inventory from a shop who's owner was retiring and have some olympic dolphin parts. i'm in california. if you want to ship it, i can take a look at it. sent me an e-mail if you wish and we can work out the details.
one of the things i've always loved about these reels is that many of the parts are stainless steel. most, not all. too bad penn did not do the same. alan
Just to let everyone know, I sent my reel to Alan Tani to look at. He called me to discuss what was wrong and what he thought he needed to do to fix it. He filed off some burrs on the main and pinion gears, replaced a dog spring and replaced the drag washers. He even respooled it with mono. This guy knows his stuff and is willing to help and to share his knowledge with others. Thank you Alan. I can't wait to go fishing!!
you never guess what the cat dragged in
I found A olympic reel in my garage that I didn't know I had, it's a olympic 60 strong and seems to work BAD if there is anyone who wants it I will take it with me and send it to him when I'm in Florida next week.
The thing must be older than I but hasn't got a dingie on it and looks new
It has a red handle knob and brown side plates.
Alan has first pick!!!!
That's the thing about these reels Marti. I got mine about 30 years ago and I'm sure that as a teenager I didn't take care of it the best I could have and it sat in the basement for awhile and I have used it alot since, yet it still looks new. The Japanese must have a way with stainless steel.
marti, i'd be happy to crack it open for you. older reels are my real interest. i have a beautiful old french mitchell casting reel on the bench right now. it's really fun to fix an old reel that someone gave up on 30 years ago, then fix it and have this guys's 10 or 12 year old son go out and catch a few fish with it. you're coming to florida, right? if there's enough time, you can try shipping it when you get stateside, i can go through it and ship it back. it's probably cheaper and easier to fly a person across the atlantic than it is a fishing reel.
Alan, sent me a email with the postal adress, it's a nice clean old but looking like new reel.
I don't need it back if I open one i just mess things up.
I sold all reels overhere my penn's and Abu's so i buy some new ones
