Any Hilton Head fishermen here? I'm coming down from Connecticut and will be there all next week. I was thinking of maybe doing a charter. Any recommendations? What fish are in the area now?
I've never taken a charter out of HHI, so can't help you there other than to say that you may get more responses at charlestonfishing.com Charleston is close to HHI and many Beaufort/HHI fisherman post there.
If you are taking your own boat or have access to one, let me know, and I can give you a fair idea of what to expect, at least nearshore/offshore. I live about 1 1/2 hours from HHI, but my parents live down that way.
I live in Hilton Head, but have limited fishing experience due to lacking a boat.
If you decide to take a charter, let me recommend taking the charter out of either Harbour Town or South Beach Marina if you'll be doing offshore fishing. If you'll be doing inshore, Palmetto Bay Marina as well as Shelter Cove are close to where a lot of inshore guides fish. The reason I recommend Harbour Town or South Beach Marina for offshore is that they're quite close to the ocean whereas Shelter Cove and Palmetto Bay, especially Shelter Cove, have long rides out of Broad Creek.
I live on the island also. How the fishing is depends alot on what you want to catch. Geographicaly, Hilton Head is located further from the Gulf Stream than most places on the East coast. So if you're looking for tuna, wahoo, dolphin, grouper, snapper, ect. you will need an all day charter on a decently sized boat and expect to travel anywhere from forty to sixty miles offshore. Kingfishing is also popular, though it's getting too late in the year. Kings are generally caught anywhere from four to twenty miles out, the Port Royal (PR2)and Savannah shippping channel being choice spots. There are also many charters inshore for tarpon, redfish, flounder, cobia, and the like.
I hope this has been helpful.
Thank you all. I am in HH now and will let you know if I get on the water. Looks like cloudy and rainy weather for the next few days. What else would you expect on a vacation!
