Default Charter in San Diego

Can any provide info on a good charter service in the San Diego area? I can spare maye one full day.

I''ll be out there in late April and would like to try my luck at some west coast fish.

Also, what's running that time of year?

if you are thinking more a six-pac charter, i can give you other options. There are some great 6-pack guys that operate out of her. That time of year you can count on the inshore action described in the above thread. The albacore may be within reach of the 1 day boats by then. The Yellow Tail should be happening on the 3/4 and 1 day boats as well. (ideal situation) just depends on what you want to catch, how far you want to go to catch it (time) etc. PM me if you need some more info, I live here, and live on these boats!

Doughnut,

I am somewhat familiar with the landings in Southern California and also fishing in Cabo. I have never had a chance to take a LR boat but I plan to when I get more time.

One thing I came across was a party boat in Ensenada. Any good? Is it safe to go down there and walk from the hotels to the docks late at night?

do a web search for:
fisherman's landing
point loma sportfishing
H and M landing
and Seaforth Sportfishing

all have cattle boats ranging from 50-95 feet long from 1/2 days up to long range trips of 11-15 days.

april is too early for local (1 day) albacore. if the water is warm enough, you may get some local yellowtail

good luck

I agree with Kerchunk. We have lots of nice party boats, great landings and several really good 6-pack boats out here. But April is usually a bit early for any offshore action. June through October are really our prime months and San Diego departures put you within range of many good spots in Mexican waters.

I'd try to track fishing conditions out here by using the AMS board and decide just before your trip what you would like to do. Many boats have lots of open dates in April as business is light till June. Here is a link to the AMS board.

Bunkerhead, Ensenada is OK. They fish Todos Santos island. It is a safe town, about a hour or two from Downtown San Diego driving. For me (us) its not worth it to go there to fish on a Mexi boat, when you can fish here on a nice well run operation for the same fish. I agree with the other guys, April is early for Albies, but maybe. The Yellow tail at our local Islands are the best bet for a Pelagic species. Also check out www.bloodydecks.com a hard core fishing forum with allot of uncouth guys like myself. You can get up to the minute whats happening reports for both inshore and offshore, daily. I will PM you James Dean with some direct connect info as you requested.

As others have allready stated , April is early for tuna, Yellow Tail, ect. What they have failed to mention is our fabulous inshore fishing. Both Mission and San Diego Bays can provide , if you know where and when, awsome cathes of Barred Sand Bass, Spotted bay bass, Calico bass, Bonita, barracuda, ocasional White Sea Bass, croaker (3-4 different species), corvina, corbina, BONEFISH !, HALIBUT, GIANT BAT RAYS, several species of sharks. Just a partial list.
As far as knowing where when, and how, there is none finer than Captain Bill Shaefer. He is a local guide and sports writer specializing in San Diego Bay And the local costal fishing. He has one of the finest bay boats you will ever see, has all the very high quality tackle you'll need, and knows how to put you on to the fish. His rates are very reasonable at $250 day. The education you will recieve from one day of fishing with Bill is worth that alone. BTW , I have no affiliation with Captain Bill. Here is his link http://www.sdfishinguide.com/ also check out sdfish.com Have fun and hope your rod gets bent plenty, Ken

Thanks, well you know I was in San Diego for a while on business and I thought about going down to Ensenada for a weekend but I didn't know if it was one of those places that you don't want to walk around.

Just to be clear. Ensenada is GREAT to walk around in and be a tourist. Much better than the border towns. Its small, gives a feel of old Mex, has great shopping and resaraunts etc. Just kind of far if fishing is your main goal.

Also, I agree, bill is the man for the inshore species. And as I said before, inshore is always happening. When you are closer to arrival, the fish counts will tell the story as to whats happening.
