How to catch live killies?

I want to catch live killies for bait at my mooring. What should I use for bait in the trap and should it be on bottom or top of water?

I use Chicken Scaps (generally the bones) from dinner. I hang the trap down about 2-3 feet. Works like a charm, now i have to find something that catches Fluke. [img]/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif[/img]

just use a minnow trap with some stale bread, keep the trap in shallow water and you have all the killies you can get, which soon means you fluke problem will be solved.

stale bread always works for me, and I like to get the trap near some shallow grass stands.
tons of killies, even fat ones that get stuck in the hole sometimes. Problem is I never catch anything with them as bait.

We've always used shrimp shells and/or heads left over from a cookout for bait, put a couple lead weights in your trap and let it sit on the bottom for a while.
Killies (or mud minnows as we call them down south) work great for flounder, trout and reds when we can't cast net finger mullet for bait. Good luck with 'em and tight lines,

Try busted up crab. That's the fastest way to get them I have found. I catch a lot of flounder on them earlier in the year but I am now moving to rock minnows and 6" mullet minnows. [img]/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif[/img]

how long until they usually show up in trap

I set mine up little creeks at low tide. I will have all the bait I need in 15 to 20 minutes. At high tide you can set it up in the grass and catch them there but not as fast as low tide. [img]/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif[/img]

The ABSOLUTE BEST bait for killies beleive it or not is Salami. Yep, you read correctly, sliced Salami. You can also use Kilbosi or any other greasy meat. The oils that come of the meat drives them nuts. As for time, I fill my trap in 1 hour with a few slices (2 or 3) of Salami in about 1' of water.

Bagels last longer than bread if you're leaving it out overnight. they like to run along things like bulkheads and sodbanks. Definitely on the bottom.
