What size hooks do you guys rig your basic ilanders with? Also, can these be run off the transom or rod riggers. I dont have outriggers. Thanks. Tight lines!!
When rigging with mono, I fish mine with ballyhoo, using a Mustad 3407 in size 7/0 or 8/0 with 80 or 120 lb mono leader material.
When rigging with wire, I use a Mustad 3412 (needle eye) in the same sizes, using #7 wire. Still with a ballyhoo.
The only exception is one ilander Tracker (black & red) with a black and silver octo skirt for wahoo. It's rigged with #9 wire as a stiff rig and a 8/0 Mustad 7691S hook.
They will run fine in any position you pull them from. I prefer to pull the smaller ones like the trackers in close and the larger ones like the black holes more towards the shotgun position, but that's just personal preference.
I run islanders, islander jrs, trackers, and sea stars and use 8/0 74007 (stainless). No need spending any more $$$ in my opinion on a hook. I use small and med hoo's 80 to 100lb mono.
I have 6/0 and 8/0 mustad SS hooks. I use straight 100 lb flourocarbon when the tuna are primary targets and I will use a short 1' 100# to 150# wire leader.... and then tie the leader to FC...I have caught tuna with the wire leaders... it really helps with the wahoo
blue and white ilanders are usually the best thing in my spread
