Need suggestions For Rods To Mate With New Penn 50vsw's
The 50's are nice and warm sitting here on my desk, but they are lonely. I'm looking for suggestions for a pair of new rods with all roller guides. I've got Penn tuna sticks on my PennII 30TW's, but I'm now leaning toward Crowder due to thier no BS warranty. They will replace or a rod if damaged no matter the cause from the reports I've seen. I currently have all Crowder rods on my other gear, but I'm open for suggestions.
FWIW: The Crowders I'm considering are in the same price range as the Penn tuna sticks I currently run on my 30's.

Younger, I broke a Penn International Stand-up 6' IGFA 50 rod not too long ago. The internationals are graphite whereas the tuna sticks are glass correct? Personally Im disappointed in Penn since they stopped making the nice 5'6" stand up rods, the new international V rods are massive.

I have a pair of Tiagra`s LRS 50 W on a pair 40/100 Calstar Grafighters
GF760M blanks with Aftco wind on rollers and reel seat and gimbal, that I built .Thats a real good match,I think that would also match up with those Penn 50`s.

Have you looked at rods from Seeker? I have my 50vsw on a Seeker and have had no problems fighting 250+ Thresher's and large Mako sharks standing up. My reel is spooled with 200 yds. 80 lb. and 800 yds. 130 lb. Spectra. Here is the Seeker Rods website:

I'll second Seeker. Best bang for the buck IMHO. I'd go with the East Coast 660XXH. You didn't mention what kind of fishing your doing, but I assume your trolling pelagics? I have 7 Seekers and have never had to make a warranty claim.

Make sure you get rods with top roller being large for wind on leaders. Most of us look at a rod and forget about the roler guides and wind on leaders. Price normally will dictates what we buy. I can tell you it will make life easier. http://www.aftco.com/catalog/AFTCOCatalog2002.pdf

Thats what I was getting at, I have been talking with several captian lately about this very subject and in the 50lb class most are getting their new rods without the rollers to accomidate wind ons.

I gave Seekers a look, but the prices turned me off although they looked to be fine rods. They are a bit rich for my blood when compared to Penn Tuna sticks or Crowder blue waters. Where are you finding the best prices on the Seekers?

if you look at boaters world book or online store they still list the penn 5'6",personally i use 7 of the penn 5'6" i think 50-130 and think there great, biggest thing to find out is how far the reel and top part of the handle is from your body when in a gimble, this is why we like the penn, good luck...david

I've used Chaos Rods for about 6 years now - from spinning to standup. The standup stuff is hard core and they will customize them for you for no extra charge. Lifetime warrantee, top name guides, reel seats and butts, and for the same price or better than Penn stuff. Plus the black blanks and gold wraps look great with the internationals - take a look...

My Penn 50sw is mounted on a 6' Tuna Stick all roller 50-130#. I spool the reel with 80# and never had a problem. Just had my drag replaced this year, and that's all I've had to do in 6 yrs of use. It's a great combo for what I use it for.

i like the chaos and check out bogey custom rods, but I agree about guides, make sure u get the windon-aftco rollers to keep your options open for windons with swivels. Your guides will last much longer if you go wind-on. Round guides are fine, but they are not top of the line, plus you will have to replace swivels much more frequently if you use wind on swivels. Might want to check out custom stand-up rods they make on west coast. They may not know how to rig dead baits like we do on the east coast, but they sure know their technical stuff, namely rods.
