Default Outrigger Rigging Techniques

Until the old posts are migrated over, I can't do a search for this topic.

Does anyone have any links to any outrigger rigging tips and techniques? I just picked up a used set of Lee's Jr. wishbones w/18' single spreader poles and need to re-rig them. I'm looking to run a double line set up and would appreciate any info or links to any articles or sites on the subject.

The riggers also could use some new bushings and a couple of tips on the spreaders - does anyone know of a retailer that could supply genuine Lee's parts?

Thanks!

I would suggest calling Lee directly for the parts - most stores are not likely to carry the parts.
Try http://www.leetackle.com/ - I had to replace some parts on mine when some a** rocked me at the
fuel dock and my riggers caught the pilings.

As far as running dual halyards, I assume you have at least 2 eyes up the length of your riggers.
Run the long halyard through all of the eyes and the second halyard at least 1 eue short ( my eyes are
just eye bolts). I have added small pulleys (West marine or similar) at the far ends. It really smooths them out.

For the boat side, I got some shock cord and then a 2 wheel pulley to run my halyards through. after I got the
length of the shock cord right, I put heat shrink over the shock cord to snug up the pulley.

For halyards, I use 400 lb black mono and have crimped heavy snap swivels into each end so I can change release
clips throughout the season.

Grady Driver, while I can't recommend any sites that feature outrigger "setups" (mostly because I don't know of any, and I'm too pressed for time here at work to surf for links ), I can describe the setup that gave me that best results.

First off, for the halyards, avoid using line that stretches. Secondly, do NOT use shock cord to control the tension. Use a heavy braid for the tension line, and pass it through a set of cam action jam cleats (just like sail "botes" use). This takes out most of the slack, giving you better control, especially in sloppy weather. Attach a pull ring to the end of the halyard tension line to make it easier to handle. Of course, running the halyards through a quality set of ball-bearing pulley blocks is just about mandatory with this setup, as is having at least a set of single spreader outrigger poles.

I got the idea from an article that appeared in Sport Fishing magazine quite a few years ago.

Thanks for the links - the Pakula one is pretty interesting!

I've read about quite a few setups so far, and I planned on using the pulleys and jam cleat as recommended - didn't come across the pull ring, but that' a good idea. I do have single spreader poles too.

So Fubar, when you say no stretch halyards, does that mean not to use 400 lb. mono? If not mono, then what do you recommend?

Although I don't have them, look at the Hal-Locks www.gotomop.com. I am thinking about giving them a try. They sound pretty much like what Fubar 15 was referring to. Also, I like the idea of a small block at the outer end of the pole.

Grady Driver, I used to use a black-dyed braid that was labled "Parachute Cord", as momofiliment will stretch.

As for the cam-action jam cleat, here's an image of one:
