Default Braid and Aftco rollers

Just wanted to ask what everyone's experience with roller guides and braid is. Has anyone ever had the braid catch the groove between the roller guides? I know that braid is very limp and can loop when it is not taught. Just wondering if anyone has had this happen?

I only use braid for bottom fishing, but I checked the roller tip well and "Tapped" in the side a little to make the gap as small as possible. No problems yet.

Yes, I've had it happen a couple of times and this is the scenario.....Tuna's busting on live chum, hookbaits keep hi tailing under the boat to hide......So I grab a pilchard, hook him thro' the nose, strip off 30 feet of spectra and fling the bait out towards the waiting tuna.....line is limp and gets into the gap between roller and guide frame...if you dont free it as soon as the fish runs you'll fray the line and lose the fish..Answer could be to use a baitcaster and silicon carbide guides on a purpose built tuna blank but I do love my Tiagra 16 and 5'6''bent butt Tuna Stick combo!

I think when you are using an 50-80# rod and your braid has the diameter of 12-20# mono the risk is there. I have had customers say its happened but I personaly havent experienced it.

thanks for the info

Never had a problem at all. Aftco has a large V groove. As long as there is some tension in the line and the rod is properly built and not twisting it shouldn't be a problem at all. Stuarts on the hand would be. You may have a problem if you're not using a topshot but you probably shouldn't be fishing for tuna without a topshot anyway.

I took a pair of pliers and crimped them a little tighter.
The Stuart Guides are the worse.

Re the comment about using top shots......if you fish small live baits to YFT the baits get bit more often if they look like the active chum, and I think fishing them on a short Fluoro leader with 50# spectra lets them swim freely and look more natural.Besides which the feel you get when that fish takes off is AWESOME!!

Yes, I have had it happen. Usually it is when trolling and the line comes off the rod tip up to the outrigger clips at an angle and thus gets out of the groove on the roller. It does a chafing number on the line sometimes when a fish hits.

The Winthrop Roller Guides which have been on the marketplace now for a while has a disgn similar to the Fin Nor guides which eliminates this problem of line pinching by the recess in the frame making it impossible to get hung up. The guides are more money than regular Aftco, and Stuarts but are away of curing the problem, They are a very very nice set of roller guides. Here is their site www.winthroptool.com check them out!! You can view the recess in one of the guide shots.

I have never had it happen with my Aftco rollers with 50 - 80# which is what I run but have had it happen with a cheaper rod with yamagoochie (unknown brand X)*rollers.

I have had it happen with my Aftco rollers and 50# braid. Happened frequently enough that I went back to mono.

Hi Guys,

I had a lot of break offs when fast trolling for wahoo, A good wave or the lure leaving the water would allow the rod to spring back and give slack. The rods are bent butt deep drop. I stopped this happening by soldering the eyes of hooks which have the eyes soldered, just in front of the roller this ensures the line stayes in the bottom of the gruve. and added benifett was being able to use them as outriggers giveing a wider spread.

regards
