Default WHATS WRONG WITH YOUR RIGS?

ONE COMMON DENOMINATOR I SEE THE MAJORITY OF "NOVICE" OR "NEWBIE" OFFSHORE BOAT OWNERS HAVE IS A MISMATCH OF EQUIPMENT.....MISMATCHING AND IMPROPER USE OF TERMINAL GEAR SUCH AS TOO BIG OF A SWIVEL OR THE ROD DOES NOT MATCH THE REEL/LINE/SWIVEL ETC ETC........OR THE HOOK IS TOO LARGE....OR THE EGG SINKER IS TOO LARGE FOR THE SAID BALLYHOO

MOST TRY TO MAKE RIGGING COMPLICATED....AND OVERDO AND OUTSIZE WHAT IS NEEDED TO GET THE PROPER JOB DONE.......HECK I'VE CAUGHT MANY MANY BILLS ON LIGHT GEAR...EVEN BLUEMARLIN ON TLD 25'S.........AND I HAVE CRANKED GIANTS IN TO MY STERN ON 90 LB WIND-ON FLUORO ON 30'S AND 50'S AND WAS FORCED TO RUN FROM THE GIANT TUNAS (IN MARCH) AND NONE OF WHICH WERE BROKE OFF!.......I RAN FROM THEM FOR I WAS SEEKING OUT YELLOWBELLIES (YFT)....THE 90# GEAR WOULDN'T BREAK!!

OVER THE YEARS I HAVE ANGLERS COME OVER TO MY FISH CLEANING TABLE, WHICH RIGHT AFTER A TRIP LOOKS LIKE A SMITHSONIAN BONEYARD, AND ASK WHAT DID YOU USE TODAY? WHAT DID YOU PULL?....I TELL THEM SEA WITCHES AND MEDIUM BALLYHOO..ALONG WITH MANY NAKED ONES........

IT KILLS ME TO BOARD A BOAT...LARGE OR SMALL......AND SEE OVERSIZED SWIVELS....IT"S NEVER UNDERSIZED!...ITS ALWAYS SOME GOLLYWHOPPER OF A SWIVEL......A SWIVEL IS DRAG PEOPLE!.....IT IS A MAGNET FOR GRASS, TRASH AND ANYTHING ELSE THAT WAS IMPROPERLY DISCARDED INTO THE DRINK....SO CASE IN POINT MAKE IT THE RIGHT SWIVEL...

EXAMPLE........50 LB ROD....50 POUND REEL....50 LB LINE.......16 POUNDS OF DAILY CHECKED DRAG....YOU DO CHECK YOUR DRAG BY A SCALE EACH TRIP DON'T YA? HMMMMM, I THOUGHT SO...ANYWAY..

ALL THIS ....50 THIS...... AND 50 THAT ......AND 16 LBS OF DRAG..........AND WHAT DO YOU DO? YOU GO BUY A 165 LB SWIVEL BECAUSE IT LOOKS BAD AS# AND YOU THEN TIE THAT ANVIL TO YOUR 50 GEAR...........HOLEY SMOLEY! GIVE ME A BREAK!!!! SAMPO LOVES YA...ROSCOE LOVES YA....THE TUNAS SURELY LOVE YA......THEY KNOW IT'S YOU UP THERE.........IT'S LIKE BLOWING A FOG HORN FROM A DEER STAND!! ......DO YOU EVER WONDER WHY WHEN YOU COME IN FROM OFFSHORE AND YOU HAVE YOUR USUAL DAILY ONE YFT OR MAYBE TWO? DO YA EVER WONDER WHY YOU CATCH JUST TWO ...MAYBE 3-4 FISH PER TRIP.........AND THEN YOU SEE THE "RUN-OFF" UNLOADING THEIR USUAL LIMIT OF YELLOWFINS AND WAHOOS...........DO YOU EVER WONDER "HOW'D THEY DO THAT?" DAY IN AND DAY OUT..OH YES , WE HAVE BAD DAYS TOO..................BUT ITS NOT THE GENERAL RULE

MAYBE THE PROBLEM WITH "CATCHING" COULD JUST BE THAT THE TALE-TALE EXTRA BUBBLE TRAIL THAT YOU ANVIL IS MAKING IN THE ATLANTIC WHICH LOOKS LIKE A COMEDY ZONE TO THE SMARTER YFT'S AND WAHOOS.........IT'S EASY TO CATCH THE DUMB ONES.....HOW ABOUT THE SMART ONES ...WHEN THE MOON IS WRONG...THE TIDE IS WRONG...THE WIND IS WRONG....AND NEPTUNE IS OUT OF ALIGNMENT WITH JUPITER...ETC...ETC

THESE THINGS ARE TOUGH ENOUGH TO BATTLE AND HERE YA GO AND PULL AN ANVIL........

ARE YOU USING A...... DOUBLE RING...... SWIVEL, OR DO YOU BUY THE EL CHEAP-O SINGLE RING.....?

THE SINGLE WILL LOCK UP AND BREAK ON A DECENT FISH......BUT THE DOUBLE RING BALL BEARING SAMPO WILL NEVER ...FOUL AND KANT-UP.....AND LOCK UP WHILE TROLLIN'

NEXT TOPIC: CRIMPS, BUT I'LL SEE WHERE THIS GIG LEADS TO FIRST

WAHOONBOX....keep it simple!

Good points Wahoo. Another question on swivels. I started using the tiny wind-on swivels, I think they are Australian. They are 150 or 200 lb, but they are only the length of a thumbnail and about as wide as a toothpick. The problem is that the hole is too small to pass a double line of mono through. Do you use these, what mono knot do you tie to them?

P.S. Glad to see you found your way to THT, welcome.

Thanks for the tip Marty!

I will admit that I am guilty of the 165 lb. swivel usage. Knowledge passed on to my by my father, who learned from one of his co-workers that thinks he knows everything.

Would you recommend the Sampo RX3C Coastlock Snap or the X3RT Tournament Snap? Sampo's website states that they both have double rings but only the X3RT pictures them.....

Anyway, welcome to THT.

How about the smaller Sea Striker ball bearing swivels? Got an opinion on those?

Have to laugh only because what he says is so true! LOL.

I was fighting a huge Blue Shark this past season right next to my buddy's boat, on one of my Penn Senator 9/0 setups on a standup rod.

He yells over, after a 1/2 hour, that he would have already had it in and cut off by now on HIS setups (International 130's ), being a real ball buster.

Well, no SH*T, lol, there's no contest with a big Blue Shark on a 130 International! But then a 130 International is not what you should "really" be using fishing in the area we were in LOL.

I don't fish out in the deeps but do find that lighter and properly balanced rigs massively outfish the alternative (inshore), especially when the fishing is tough.

Marty,

How about covering up those swivels with a squid (small hoochie type)? How about using the large sampo with a green machine

Sorry Marty...had to go there! Listen up...Marty will pontificate on all this stuff and you know what, he's right. He's one detail-oriented anal sob but he tells it like it is. Forget that he hates plastics eschews only the value of hoo's or split-tail mullet because he is a fish-catching fool and will give you the shirt off his back. I'm dying to go fishing with him but have not had the stars line up for me. That will change this year for sure.

Marty, bring it on...how about the small 80 pound barrel sampo wind-on's? Yea or nea? I typically use them but am open to other suggestions...

Where is the swivel supposed to go?? Most of my rigs don't have a swivel, am i missing something?

I have 50's w/ 50# suffix and a 6ft Bimini twist, going to homemade dacron loop wind-on leader. WO is 90 flourocarbon approx 30ft long. I put my sea witch on the WO and crimp my hook, and sinker if used. I can run these anywhere in my spread and keep 100% flouro in the water and no swivels or any other "drag"

Some have a 90# snap swivel on the end of the bimini twist, for wire leaders, but no swivel.

Up here in the Northeast I fish mainly for stripers, but I intend to use this info come next season. I had to laugh when I read this because I always use the same size swivel, Big, and I'm always getting stuff caught in it. Thanks for the tip.

OKAY...SOMETHIN FISHEY........."WHERE IS THE SWIVEL SUPPOSED TO GO? " YOU ASK..........

YOU ALONG WITH 8 MILLION OTHER ANGLERS , INCLUDING MYSELF, ...DO FISH WIND-ON LEADERS...........LET'S NOT RE-INVENT THE WHEEL HERE ON THIS "SWIVEL" POST........THIS POST IS ABOUT "USING A SWIVEL"........

YOU OBVIOUSLY HAVE NEVER FISHED IN THE LAND OF WAHOOS WHERE #8 PIANO WIRE IS USED......A SWIVEL IS A MUST............WITH WIRE LEADERS.....YOUR REPLY SOUNDS LIKE WE ARE ALL DUMMIES FOR USING A SWIVEL

I AM MERELY TRYING TO ADD SOME INSITE TO USING A DOUBLE RING SNAP SWIVEL...........LET'S TALK ABOUT WIND-ONS ON ANOTHER POST

One instance where you do need a strong swivel if you are fishing blue marlin with windon rigs. Here your wireman will normally still need to take wraps on a stubborn fish, especially on lighter tackle which cannot so easily overpower the fish, and the swivel had better be strong enough to withstand the direct pull on the leader. You don't need to use such a strong swivel if you were using a conventional setup (double line tied to snap swivel then snap swivel clipped to a conventional long leader) because you will seldom if ever apply more force to the swivel than the strength of your line, but when you use say a 250 or 300 lb. leader on a windon rig you will need a fairly strong swivel connection to avoid failure when you have to wire a decent fish because a good wireman can pull much harder on the leader than the strength of the line. It isn't just a strength issue but also safety. If a swivel parts under heavy pressure on the wire it'll come flying back at you pretty quick and can be very nasty.

When you stop using "oversized" letters, I will consider small swivels!

Hey Gingersdad,
Stripers have tremendous eyesight, they will see that big swivel and run. I usually tie the leader directly to the line & the knot is enough to limit the egg sinker. I don't get a lot of twisting with eels or spot so the swivel is not even necessary.

MrPat, he already xplained why he uses the caps and stuff. Check out the CAROLINA's forum. To me, ain't no big thing and I can deal with it. A little understanding can go a long way. jmo

I'm interested in learning the best way to tie a hoo without a pin and with a 1/8oz weight. Stuff like that. You know wahoo, THAT would make a great video. Hoo rigging 101, 102 and 103. I would love to see that

Easy guys . . . no need to get pi$$ed at each other

WAHOONBOX likes his upper case letters . . . I use 'three periods to break down my ideas . . . and Jim at Arctekmarine ................. uses lots of periods and lots of LOL* LOL* LOL . . . what is the problem? Either you like it or you skip over it.

Don't like UPPERCASE, don't read the post and let the guy do his thing . . . don't like my use of the threee period convention . . . tough, don't read my posts

I personally find all UPPERCASE as being hard to read, but not hard enough so as to not*read a person's post if it is on a topic I like.

I personally find that one page paragraphs with no punctuation and all lower case very hard to read, nearly impossible for me . . . I just don't bother reading the post because it is too hard for me . . . however, I will not give the guy a blast because he does not follow a given protocol. GIVE IT A BREAK GUYS

YAH, ALL UPPERCASE HAS A CONVENTION OR CONNOTATION that you are yelling, but Wahoonbox was not yelling at you, he was conveying good and useful information. easy on the UPPERCASE bellyaching . . . no need to pi$$ someone off because you don't like how he types

IF YOU WANT TO YELL AT SOMEONE, yell at me for my poor grammar and sentance structure . . . I will not yell back at you, I promise . . . but I will not take a grammar course to make you happy . . . now lets all breath slowly and relax . . . and repeat after me

*THT is for Fun

*THT is for Fun

Oh, look what you gone and did, Mr Pat!!

You made the surly teenager mad because he is AN INDIVIDUAL and must do it HIS way. And if anyone says ANYTHING that offends his sensibilities he goes to his room and slams the door.

Oh, by the way, I know he's not really a teenager because he said so when he was telling us about how his 54 year old eyes can't see so good anymore, and how he's broken eight fingers wiring tuna.

Wahoonbox has a wealth of knowledge, but his ego gets blistered anytime someone says something about his BIG LETTERS. You'd think he'd have gotten over it by now. After all he told me that over 500 computer gurus had already said something to him about his BIG LETTERS.

Wahoonbox, my guess is that you're a good guy. And you definitely have a lot to offer everyone on this site with your years of experience and your entertaining way of telling stories. Maybe you could try just telling those who bring up the ALL CAPS thang that you do it because of your eyesight and your lack of manual dexterity due to your many fishing injuries. I'm sure that most, if not all, of us who have brought it up would be willing to accept that and go along with your unique style.

Getting pissy and trying to make people guilty because they say something about it isn't a very good way to deal with it. IMHO.

I for one would love to hear more of what you have to say. ALL CAPS or not.

Tight lines.
