you mean the 114hlw or the 114h. Both are the newer high speed models, but the hlw has more capacity and only weighs a little more. I'd get the hlw if it were a choice between the 2.

My 114's are the standard ratio, not high speed.

I don't use them for Tuna or Mako, though, mine are rigged with steel for trolling Umbrellas, Parachutes, or large Tubes.

I don't own any high speed Senators.

I like to fight my fish a little bit, rather than rip the hook out. It's similar to using Four-Wheel-Drive.....You have 4WD Low and 4WD High, LOL. Which has more power, and takes less effort?

The high speeds are OK, it's just personal preference. I like the low gear ratio.

I think you should opt for a couple of the 9/0 (115's?) senators for around 130.00... it has alot more line capacity for tuna and Mako.

The high speed senators will bring in light drag lures in a hurry and will be better for fast retrieve jigging.

But I do not use these techniques for tuna or mako, and this is a useless feature to me as I troll heavy lures, bait, or chunk most of the time, and prefer the lower gear ratio of the regular reel when fighting these heavy fish on standup, without the benefit of a 2 speed system.

I also carry a 9/0 when something big is in the area, but this is really to get more drag capacity, as the braid lines give you twice the capacity, that now allows you to go to lighter reels than the 114's.

But if you like to fish with 80-130 lb mono instead of 80 lb braid with a topshot of mono, then the wider spool is better, especially if you can get it with the slower retrieve.

I carry 5 lever drag TLD25's with 50 lb line and one standard low speed Senator 9/0 with 80#.

114 H is fine. Unless you're going after giant sharks and huge BFT's, the regular 114's will be fine. High speed gear ratio for your purposes is useless.

The 114H IS a high speed.

I personally use 9/0 (115) Senators and Daiwa Sealine 900S for Shark & Tuna.

114s are OK for trolling for smaller Tuna, but I'd hate to be chunking and hook a Giant with one!

What I meant was the 114HLW will work fine but the high gear ratio is not needed. The plain old 114's are more than adequate. I've caught countless sharks and BFT's on my old stand bye 114s with the barn red composit sides. Not the newer HLW's. The reels I have are at least 15 years old. I just get them serviced every other year and change the drag every season.

The "old" 114's with the red side-plates are still high speed. Standard 114's have black side plates. Both old & new.

The 114's I have are also older ones with the cast spools, but they are standard 114's (black plates).

Red equals High speed
Black equals normal speed

Bullshipper, Penn 6/0 (114) and 9/0 (115) has exactly the same gears and drag system.Same parts numbers. The 6/0 will do anything that a 9/0 will except hold as much line.
