Boys got into em heavy today..

Ocean City MD Sunset Marina Report:

Everyone that reported to us went to the Washington today: "Osprey" released 22 whites and caught a dolphin, "Sea Slammer" released 15 whites, "Reel Joy" released 32 whites, "Pumpin Hard 58" released 19 whites, "Makara" released 32 whites, "Legasea" released 27 whites, "Tarheel" released 30 whites, 1 blue and caught 3 dolphin. But the biggest story of the night is the "Billfisher" released a record 57 whites. What a great day, all told we had 234 whites caught and released from 8 boats.

Congrats to Billfisher!!! Not sure if 239 tops last Sept 23, 2009 WM bite that the boys out VA beach recorded, I was fishing the Baltimore that day and was running away from WM trying to catch YFT, ended up with 5 WM releases and 4 YFT, great to see back to back years of GREAT marlin fishing here in the mid Atlantic.

I know that I am going to sound like a prude and I don't mean to start any wars ..... but what is the post-release mortality rate of a white marlin after a 20 minute fight to exhaustion? Are sharks actively following white marlin waiting for an easy meal? Are marlin able to re-oxygenate their blood in a reasonable time?

Dunno the data on that, but for those that fish for WM a 20min battle is rare.

When you release 57 whites in one day, you are catching them a lot faster than 20 minutes, When I talked to them that night they said they had 6 whites on at once on 3 separate occasions. My friends that were on the "Makara" went out 2 days later and have some sick video and underwater pics of swimming with the whites while they are balling up bait!!

I thought that the record for whites caught in one day was north of 100? Is that a local record? But you are right about that being a very busy day. We had a day like that catching sailfish in Isla Mujeres a couple of years back and a few other days there later in the season catching 60+ fish when the sails, whites, blackfin and HUGE dolphin are fighting over the same bait ball. There isn't a whole lot of time to rest.
