Snapper Tactics and Tackle OK, now that they have decided to reopen the snapper season at the beginning of October, I'm curious to see what kind of tactics and tackle other people use to bring in the elusive red snapper.
Personally, we fish the rigs in South Louisiana, preferably in 50-150' of water, near structure, be it the rig, rock pile or wreck. We go out with flats of frozen porgey or live hardtails and mullet, using bucktails to entice them further. Also, we find the bigger fish are farther away from the rigs, and tend to like a bait freelined out the back of the boat.
The gear we use is your everyday snapper stuff, lots of penn6/0, calcutta 700's, and Tekota 700, on a variety of rods, from lightweight, 12-40#, to 15-50's.
Would love to hear from everyone else, always looking to step up my game, and bring in bigger fish.
Also, so far, in my young life, personal best is a 25.9#
