If you need a charter captain for rockfishing at the Outer Banks, try Capt. Rick Caton on the Free Agent/Custom Sound Charters. His website is www.customsoundcharters.com. Have fished with him in the past and scheduled to go this winter. Call ASAP for availability. The fish start running oceanside around November through early March when they start falling off. I think the soundside season opens October 15 and you ean kepp your limit of 2/day @ 18" min. on Fri./Sat./Sun./Wed. only. Double check with North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries for their latest Proclamation for the Rockfish/Striped Bass season. If you have a boat to tow there are several good areas soundside you can fish if you can't get on the Free Agent or other charters for the ocean. Hope this helps.

Rick has a good reputation for putting you on fish ... however, you may want to do a search on this board and also ncwaterman to find out more.

Tom,
Been there, done that. I still stand by my comments regarding fishing with Rick Caton. Has always been helpful even if I've hauled my own boat down that way to fish. Me thinks that topic has absolutely been beat to death.

Sitting here looking out at the ocean in Nags Head right now.* To answer your questions:
(1) typically after Thanksgiving to early February when the water gets too cold.* Plenty of good days to fish in December!
(2) best charter boat?* that is a pretty easy question.......virtually any of them that fish the winter rock fishery out of Oregon inlet Fishing Center or Pirates Cove* Marina (both have websites with booking access).* I say any of them because if the fish are there, everyone is within mile or so of each other.* These captains stick together and will let each other know where the fish are (that's why we private boats watch where the big boys head/congregate).* On particular boats, I personally like FightnLady, Skiligal, Carolinean, Poacher; who I have fished with before.
(3) as far as where to stay........make some points with the Admiral and get a rental house and make a mini vacation out of it (3 day or a week).* Rates go way down in the winter.* Prior to Dec. 15, it is not unusual to be able to go on the beach in shorts.* Stan White realty and Sun Realty should be able to help with that.* There are also a number of motels that run package deals for rock fishing during the winter.* Check out the Dare County tourist website.
