4 lg cans (12 oz.) of oily fish-based catfood (tuna/whitefish) with a whole box of oatmeal. Mix thoroughly by hand, freeze in a chum sock (inside a ziplock bag). Your canned mackerel sounds good with the oatmeal too.
Recently saw another which I'm going to try:********************************************** ********************************** Empty soda bottle perforated with a bunch of small holes. Fill bottle*95% with dog food (dry kibble) and then top off with Menhaden oil. Let dog food absorb the oil, then top off again. Attach a small*eye bolt to H.D. bottle cap. Tie to line and chum. Can be messy, so keep a ziplock bag handy.

For Yellowtail chum, I use chicken feed, steamed oats, menhaden oil, a block of frozen chum and some cooked rice. Works everytime for me.
For ballyhoo - just some oats spread on the surface.

Go ahead and spend the $129.95 and buy a Chum Churn. Fresher is better, every time. Use trash fish or left over (fresh frozen) bait.
I've been using a Chum Churn for the past 4 years and it has revolutionized my summer time fishing. The noise it makes brings fish to the boat long before they could be attracted by the scent of the chum.
I've operated charter boats since 1963 and I truly believe that other than new navigational equipment, the Chum Churn has been the most significant addition to my arsenal in lots of years. I've made believers out of most of my clients.
I realize that this is mighty high praise for a product and, as far as I can remember, I have made similar statements about only 3 products in my entire life. Some folks make all kind of statements, putting their name and reputation on the line for cash or products but I'm not one of these.

Funny thing is my chum will attract Shark's but for some reason it repales them also here is the Recipe
... Two scum bag Lawyers, 25 gallon's of Fish Innerds(gut's), 50 pounds of rolled Oat's ( buy them from a feed store)
and all the Back bones and head's my local fish mart throw's out from cleaning that days sale..
what i do is run it all Less the oats through a grinder and slowly mix in 5 Gallon's of oil!!!
when that's all mixed well I then combine the Oats and form in to half gallon jug's left over from Kids Milk!!!
and then freeze it all....it work's will draw Shark's and King's from long distance but I think the Shark's spit it back out because of adding the Lawyers to the mix!!!!!!!!!

1 ~ 5 gallon bucket
1 ~ Block of frozen chum
1 ~ bag (25lb) Playsand
2 ~ boxes Elbow Macaroni
1 ~ loaf of bread
Pour half a bag of playsand in the bucket. put in the loaf of bread, Put the block of chum in the 5 gallon bucket and let thaw. Boil up the Mac and pour over the sand/thawed chum/bread mixture. Pour in just enough seawater (when you are on the water getting read to fish!) to make it soupy. Ladle into the water and the elbow macs head to the back of the chumslick and the playsand heads to the bottom making an excellent water column chumslick.... oh, and Salt and pepper to taste....

1) Stop at local bait shop.
2) Pull $20 bill out of pocket.
3) Walk in freezer and pull out frozen 5-Gallon bucket of Bunker Chum.
4) Go fishing, poke holes, tie off, lol.
Seriously, tho, I have thought about making my own chum sometime but need a bigger chest freezer first, and a grinder, and the ingredients, and.... and..... I may do it eventually but for now the $20 bucket in the morning is easier and certainly works great so far.
Interesting "recipes" so far

I'd love to be able to hook up with a local fish market for some guts and carcasses! Then take a 5HP Wood Chipper and a gallon of Menhaden Oil and go to town!

1 pint or two of clams
1 can tuna, salmon, cat food.....whatever is on sale!
1-2 cups food stolen from my dogs dish
1 teaspoon minced garlic.......I learned of this ingredient from an old fisherman
mix all together.
take a couple empty plastic 12oz water bottles cut the tops off and fill w/ mixture 1/2 way then add water to full and freeze.
My dispenser is a 2" x 12" piece of PVC pipe capped on one end and screw cap on the other w/ an eye bolt and some line tied to it.....drilled full of holes. I also poured a little cement in the bottom end, so it will sink.
I keep 2-3 bottles on ice in a ziploc, smack one on the gunwale to loosen the insides and drop the contents into the dispenser and chunk it over the side..........Oh yeah, don't forget to tie it off..........!
