Default Cobia lures. Lets hear them.....

Ok I know live eel, bluecrab or pinfish is the #1 bait for Cobia.

What about if you dont have live bait and they arent taking dead shrimp or cut mullet?

I have heard of bucktails being effective. What else. How bout them fake eels. Would that work?

Besides free gaffing them what can you use to entice a strike?

We use Berkeley Black Eels. They are about 7" long and have two sets of single hooks. look lifelike in water.
Gulp crabs work good too but better on Permit.

8" chartreuse curly tail grub with a 2 oz jig head.

In the last 3 years I never had a lemon turn one down.

If you see them and are sight casting, bucktails with curly tail grubs are very effective. If you want to drift or anchor, get some good chum and put an eel or bunker under a balloon. Only problem with the chumming is you will also attract the toothy cousins (sharks).

I only free mine into the hold after I gaff them, but there's plenty of ice.

Here, we sight cast around buoys, markers etc. mostly with bucktails with a curly grub, or rubber eels, even large sluggo's. I have even caught a few with surgical tube eels I bought for Barracuda.

Saw a guy catch one on a frozen softshell once. I have also had decent luck with live croaker, you can alw2ays catch those here so never really without live bait.

Tunny, where is that pic in your sig? very cool

On the OBX we use a 3 oz. jig with colors varying from orange to white and 6 to 8 inch tails.I prefer a jig with white head and chartruse skirt with a 8 inch white tail.

Curly tails work..........but the best curly tails are the Berkley Gulp. I've not had a lemonfish turn one down yet.

Free gaffing is a really really BAD idea!!!! I was with a buddy of mine in savanah at one of the bouy's when 2 were circling the boat. He actually hooked the fish but the fish had NO intentions of comming in and bent the 6 foot gaff in half!!

So everyone is using a bucktail jig with a grub attached? Will the jig work without the grub?

What about the Gulp 10" eel? Are those any good? How do you rig them?
