I have a little Shimano Stradic 5000 (195 yds/12lb) and was contemplating trying some braid. What kind do you like on a small spinner that will be used for throwing surface plugs?
I have a 5000 and it's set up with 20lb Sufix braid... Very happy with it (by the way I've always thought the 5000 was a bit on the large side.... I keep 3 or 4 smaller Stradics on the skiff as well and they get a lot more use than the 5000) for working walk the dog plugs and subsurface stuff for tarpon up to about 80lbs.

I don't set up a spinner with braid the same way that I'd set up a conventional reel since all I want is to get the casting benefits of braid... I load the spool 2/3 full with mono, then only the last 1/3 (or less, I'm wanting about 300 feet of braid) is braid. The two lines are spliced with doubled unis (five turns for the mono, nine turns for the braid). Although the braid is 20lb, the mono stays at 12lb... You get the benefits of the braid without the cost, very handy when you're on the water 150+days a year...

I do the same thing using the mono first, then I am using 20# power pro, and really like it
