Default Avet MXL 5/8 reels

Just picked some up. WHat should I spool them with. Used for trolling for mahi/wahoo/yft if i can get some luck. Plan on doing braid with mono topshot, prefer red line

I would put about 60yds of 50lb mamoi diamond mono on the bottom so the braid wont slide on the spool, i would then put 500 yds of accubraid(moss green all it comes in) of 50lb, then finish off the spool with the rest of the mamoi that you can fit.

Altough i dont see why you wouldnt have just gone with the LX which has 6lbs more of drag at full than the MX. The LX also has a bigger spool capacity which would be alot more practical for the fishing that you are talking about.

so the avet's don't have a little stud to secure the braid to like the penn's do?

you should be fine with the reels you have unless you get into a really big wahoo. good luck getting a yft around here. not to doubt your skills as a fishermen but they've been a pretty rare site off Charleston the last few years.

I am not sure if they have a little stem on the arbor, but you don't need to put mono on the spool to prevent slip. Just put a single layer of tape and the spectra will grip on it. Basil at BHP Tackle did a write up on what kind of tape to use and how he ties it to the arbor and there is no problem with slipping.

I have the MXJ and have 300yds of 50lb spectra on them with room to spare for a small topshot if I want, but I don't troll with these so I don't have a topshot. I think 50lb spectra on the MXL will work great. 60lb may be a little too big and you won't get as much capacity. I like Jerry Brown spectra myself. The 50lb I have is JB solid spectra, not hollow. But everyone likes their own kind of braid/spectra.

Good luck,
Kg

Feel free to doubt my fishing skills lol. I'm new at this.

I swear by all that is holy, I will catch one YFT out of Charleston, if it takes a fuel bladder and the other side of the stream. I don't think I'd need the fuel bladder though

I have no doubt you'll be able to catch ONE. Getting them consistently to the boat is another matter. Best of luck and hope you prove me wrong.

So this will be a pretty stupid question... but could you give me a rough idea of what there is to be caught offshore an a month basis? like "in sept, you should fish for ___, ___, and ___"

may and june are the better months for dolphin. wahoo seem to be around pretty much year round but i think people catch less of them during may, june, july b.c the dolphin are everywhere. sailfishing picks up during the fall but a fair number are caught during the summer months. kingfishing is best during late summer and early fall but the smaller ones are around all the time, especially at the artificial reefs.
