I posted on an old thread earlier but I am just looking for some general advice. I recently rented a house for the summer in avalon, nj with friends for the 2nd summer. Last year we did some inshore fishing out on the reef and had some success and this year I am looking to do some Tuna Fishing (Preferrably 45 miles and closer) I have fished offshore out of Ocean City, Maryland most of my life so this is almost an entirely new area to me. Any advice on time of year or places to fish Tuna out of Townsend Inlet would be great. Thank you! Trolling or chunking for Tuna would be the preference
have been running townsend inlet all my life..45 miles huh.....well the 19fathom lump is a little farther but not too bad and you have the cigar, 28 mile wreck, the sea isle ridge sometimes holds tuna.....the lobster claw is 55 i believe and has bee a hot spot for blue fin the last few seasons...

Good advice above, let me add that it's been my experience that the inshore tuna bite (cigar, 28m wreck, SI Ridge) can be extremely short some years - like 2 weeks or less. NOT the same as the offshore fishery which can last into October or later once it gets started. Some seasons we're lucky to have them hang around close for 6wks or more, but often they're here and gone before you know it. Your boat, your tackle, and your crew need to be prepared and ready to go. Get yourself a chart and start studying, and don't forget you'll need an NMFS permit - http://www.nmfspermits.com/
Mainly the same northern spots and season as oc, md just have to run farther. 19 fathom, massy's canyon, hambone, hot dog, etc. mako in june, bft usually start to show in July and later in the season generally the lobster claw is the place to go. The two closest canyons are the baltimore and Wilmington. The cigar is 30 or so off. I have caught some nice bfts & sharks there, but it wouldn't be my first choice on most days. Most guys troll early in the season, then chunking and jigging take center stage. Just remember that the current rips under the TI bridge and it is a little bit of a squeeze depending on what size boat you have. Good luck.
I can 50- 60 without a problem. Thank you for your advice. I just wanted to see what the options are. I am looking forward to a good year of fishing. Where do you buy your bait? I am looking for a good shop down there, preferrably in avalon, sea isle, or stone harbor. Plus to get he advice on a weekly bassis. I cant stand fishing the back bay with the flies on most days... its brutal, I am definitely lookin forward to getting out there
