Default Alaska fishing

I'm going to Alaska in Sept , cruise thru inner passage. What should the fishing be like that time of year and what type of fish (Salmon, trout?)? Would I be better served to try it another time.

Here's a chart for the area around the Tongass National Forest, Sumner Straits and Petersburg.

You're a little late for good salmon fishing, but just right for the fog and rain. Early September is approaching the end of the season for Coho in Alaska. If you want to experience SE Alaska at its best I'd try mid to late June, for Chinook or mid to late July for Cohos. The further south you go the later the fishing remains good. In Puget Sound we can have Cohos through October....
One issue is where the cruise ship goes, when we passed through Ketchican last week we saw the charter boys picking up cruise passengers for a 1/2 day fishing, all they did was run a couple of miles and just fished in a group of 20 or 30 boats, this is not exactly the Alaska experience I would have in mind....... We did see that some smaller cruise ships were getting into places like Pettersburg or Hoonah if you could charter out a smaller town I think the experiece would be much more enjoyable...

Great fish Auguste! I'd like to wrestle with one or two of those. I did a "salmon trip" in july a couple of years ago out of Ketchican and we just trolled around a short distance from the docks. Maybe that works sometimes but not that time and the boat capt was not gonna burn gas to look to look elsewhere. A charter boat guy down this area wouldn't last long doing that but what the heck we are just passing thru. Anyway Sept is when we are gonna be there so I was wondering what my prospects might be. What about a fly in type river fishing? Sound any better? Thanks for the info guys.
