Menhaden a oilly bait fish (not of real commercial value here in the USA) that makes up a large staple of the diet of bass and blues, and other fish. The BIG Problem is the Fed's have allowed offshore trawlers to take mililons of pounds of this feed stock for our sportfish this year off RI. Will the other fish have enough bait too eat is not known, but lack of feed - stresses the other fish stocks, and may cause us big problems later on.......
Quite the contrary, menhaden has much commercial value here, just not as table fare. It is harvested commercially to produce fish oil. You can do the research as to*what fish oil is used for - you'd be surprised.
Menhaden is a big business here in the US, fish oil pet food, fertilizer and other products are made from Menhaden.
Menhaden stocks are at near historic lows but the good news is ASFMC has decided to discuss menhaden management next year. Talks could lead to the ecosystem management plan. A good step in the right direction.
I have not seen them either. I usually see them all over the place. Last year there were alot of fish kills. Maybe that has somehting to do with it Hopefully we will see them soon. I was out last night and my Brother Pulled a nice SeaBass in the Bay. About a 4 pounder up by Warwick.
Lots around Joisey. Got the giant reduction boats out of State waters and there has been lots more bunker around the past two years. Lots more bigger bass, too. Maybe OMEGA took yours.
Omega Protein here in Virginia is trying their best to catch most of the menhaden in the Chesapeake Bay which is a major spawning ground. Write to ASMFC and ask that they study the effect of the menhaden fishery in Chesapeake Bay on the long term health of menhaden stocks.
i was off a.c on sun bout 8 miles on my run in i spotted a school about as round as a baseball field . we chased them arround for awhile but only got little blues out of if
I was out for about 6 hours on Saturday and about 6 hours on Sunday and I didn't see one school of menhaden. That doesn't mean they are not there but it is odd to not see any yet. The blues are in good but no menhaden to speak of yet in Narragansett Bay.
