Default Buying Used Tackle

Are there other places to buy used rods, reels, & tackle besides e-bay? What do you need to watch out for not to get scammed?

Craigslist often has some very good deals. www.searchtempest.com is a great Craigslist search tool. Forums like this one have outstanding deals as well. Use Google to help with vetting the seller. You could Google something like "A-1 outboard scam" or "A-1 outboard complaint" or "A-1 Outboard problem" arbitrarily of course. You'd be surprised what your data mining would reveal.

I'd like to ask though, what it is you want to buy and how can your local vendors not satisfy that need? Do you need a lot of tackle? Are you a regular bargain hunter like myself? If you want a specific item, Google the item name followed by the word closeout, sale or clearance. Use Pay Pal if you can so that you have recourse if someone rips you off. Just some random thoughts.

Thanks guys! I usually look on THT first. There aren't any great local tackle shops in our area, but mainly I'm trying to find used equipment online. I pruchase my first reel, a speedmaster, off e-bay last night so we'll see how that goes. I've got garage full of tackle, but you can never really have enough!!

I've been buying used tackle for a few years from Buy/Sell forums on various fishing/boating sites..It's a great way to pick up like-new stuff at a fraction of the price.. As others point out, the trading dock here on THT is a great resource... I also have had great luck finding deals and honest sellers on Stripers Online very well run buy/sell board. I am careful about who I buy from, in that I avoid " new members" or those with very few posts..And If i notice the seller is slow to respond to questions or correspondence, I will likely move on.. figuring if they are slow BEFORE the sale, it not likely to improve after they have my $$.. I pay exclusively with PayPal.. just to have some kinda of protection and "paper trail" .. But in general, I have yet to be burned, and I've found most sellers out there to be honest fisherman

Save your milk money all winter and go the Dania Marine Flea Market in March (i think) Bring cash and a shopping list. last year saw Chaos rods at 1/2 price. Okuma reels at 50-70% off. terminal tackle out the wazoo for pennies off the tackle shop prices. I can't wait, already started my list. Looking for a set of 5/0 trolling set ups for the May run. I cleaned up last year big time!

Dania Flea Market has tons of stuff

Just Fishing Consignment in Riviera Beach. Usually has lots of rods, reel selection not as good. Give them a call. Gets different stuff moving through there all the time.

Both are hit or miss......Good Luck

I have picked up some tackle at pawn shops. I'll stop at a pawn shop every once in a while and sometimes they have good deals on rods and/or reels.

Thanks, feeling better now.

Going on 7 weeks of antibiotics and the knee is at about 75%. Infection is gone now but some swelling remains and its sore from the hack kid PA that probed under the cap for fluid sampleing.

Lesson: Dont let kids around your leg with sharp tools.... Id like to give that little prick a nice fresh bruise.

I picked up two grouper set ups last year, Boca rods and Okuma 2/0 reels for about 70$ each. brand new. You gotta shop hard and that takes alot of beer in the March sun. Bags of 7/0 circle hooks, 6$ for 100.

Dania dates for 2010 ar March 18-21. 12$ Thursday and 10$ all other days.

See ya there!

You just need to check the boards regularly. I bought an Avet 50w here, and have bought several reels off ebay. There was a killer deal on a Tiagra 16 here this week.

One place not mentioned is www.bloodydecks.com . They have a classified section that has some good deals if you check it enough.

It's just South of the Ft. Lauderdale International Airport about 2 miles at most off US 1 at the Dania Beach Jai alai fronton.
There is also a very good one at the Pompano Beach amphitheater Jan 30 and 31st
It's their 19th annual www.nauticalfleamarket.com
Dania is bigger and goes on for 4 days, but Pompano is excellent also

I have bought a few things on THT and no problems also use ebay a LOT and only bought 1 reel that was not up to par but it was more I did not read all the details but other than that never had a problem with ebay, however I do have a rule of thumb in that I will not pay more than half price for a reel that is used. I miss a lot of deals that way but it has worked for me
