Default Great White Shark Expedition: Offshore Adventures Part II

A lot of folks watched the show "Offshore Adventures" for several years on ESPN2. It's off the air, but Chris Fischer and the crew of the Go Fisch have been busy.

They are working with oceanic researchers on a variety of projects. I mentioned earlier this year Chris was at the Miami Boat Show and gave a preview of what they're working on: Great Whites in the Pacific. The preview was amazing. There's a brief write up in the current Saltwater Sportsman Magazine. Working of the Mexican coast at Guadalupe Island, they caught giant GW's up to 4,000lbs; taking live tissue samples and then releasing them back into the wild! How they hook and capture these fish is amazing. The show airs this Monday night on the National Geographic Channel

When: Monday, 16 November at 9:00PM
Where: National Geographic Channel

I'm Tivo'ing it

It looked like the had a platform they were lowering and then drag the fish up on it and raise it above water level. They were pumping water into the fish's mouth in the commercial I saw. I wonder what having all the fish's weight on the platform without the support of the water does to the fish. I'm sure that's a question that got answered before they started. I forgot to watch it last night. I'll have to look for the re-runs.

I watched it, VERY INTERESTING. amazing really. i was surprised at how docile the sharks acted when taken out of water. they didn't flip or bite or do much at all. they were getting all close to their mouths and everything too. taking blood out of the hook wound!! crazy people. the fish all swam away ok, and they are putting tags on these fish and they've been transmitting information for years, so it seems the time out of water hasn't harmed them much if at all.

i was a little dissapointed with the tag's capabilities though. they have to transmit, above water, for 3 minutes in order to get a good transmission. that seems ridiculous. they haven't found a way to make them constantly transmit, even through water? i figured that they would by now, but what do i know??

The key issue is battery life - they want the tags to last as long as possible, so they effectively go dormant while fully submerged since an antenna has to be above water to transmit radio waves.

aha! that makes sense.

how about a battery that recharges with water power? put a little turbine in there or something, hahahaa.

They have figured it out, but the kicker is to penetrate water to some kind of depth the radio waves must be extremely long such that the radio wave is practically straight (which means the frequency is VERY low) when it goes through the water. And in order to produce a radio wave that is that long takes a very long antenna, which is not condusive to the tags they are using. There are land based antennae that can do this, but they are very big!

Very neat and crazy. I agree, working next to a Great Whites mouth while he is alive..Yikes!! I wonder how much damage they did to the shark keeping it out of the water also due to weight. I mean we cant even lift some fish out of the water to take pictures (per fisheries dept) because it will cause damage to the fish... I cant imagine what lifting that large of animal out of the water does to it...

I thought the same thing. Something that heavy without a bone-supported exoskeleton would tend to become pretty docile as its internal organs became compressed on a deck. That said, I got the impression at least one that was captured last year is doing fine and transmitting occasionally. Guess they know what they're doing.
