the last week Duarte and his crew caught a Marlin with 1107lb. The Angler who fought the fish was 69 years old and it was the first Marlin of the gentleman.
But then the sh...t happened. Near the boat a shark attacked the fish and bited big pieces of meat out of him.
After this attack the fish had a weight of 1107lb.
So the question is "Would it be a record without this shark-attack"?
well if they estimated its weight at 1300lbs pre shark bite and it ended up 1100lbs after then it probably didnt have much of a chance anyways. Alot of places dont frown upon killing billfish like in america and actually will eat the marlin.

Good size looking fish, too bad the sharks got away with some of the weight. Can't speculate on what the scale would have read. But I'm sure they didn't eat the 700 lbs. that it would have taken to beat the fish in the link. That is a all world record that may never be broken. http://www.hawaiifishingnews.com/records_d.cfm?ID=8

Wow! I have never seen that photo, or that fish. I agree it might not ever be broken. However some speculation about 2 "grander." But with the over fishing I have my personal doubts about a food chain to support that type of fish.

"Choy's Monster" is the largest documented on rod and reel I believe, but there have been no doubt "double granders' landed commercially. At least judging by some of the pics I have seen.
Choy's fish is not recognized by the IGFA as any sort of record. As far as killing a fish that size there is no doubt that I wouldn't have thought twice about throwing a flying gaff in her!!!! Nice catch, sucks about the sharks.
I've released many small ones had one die on me and killed one to eat (and they are damn good to eat). Recreational killing of blue marlin, or any billfish doesn't do enough damage to the population to even talk about. If you wanna bitch about killing fish bitch about the longliners, that's where the damage is done.
Nice catch, nice kill. Congrats.
