I was trolling Tuesday in the usually pristine waters off the Baja Pacific coast near some old tuna seiners that were wrapping up schools of little yellowfin. One had apparently leaked some oil in the water that had degraded to a tar-like consistency. JB Spectra on two rods was fouled.
Any suggestions as to what solvent/cleaner might remove the mess and not harm the line?
I'd take a soft rag and slightly moisten it with mineral spirits before rubbing the fouled line through it... As the goo builds up on the rag, keep moving it to expose new surface to the line... Mineral spirits will clean off any petro products and shouldn't harm the line. You can do it more than once if you choose. I'd be surprised though if the line didn't have some residual staining but all that is just an appearance problem... Good luck, post how it comes out.

Coil it off into a 5 gal bucket ... gas/mineral spirits or any type of solvent, but it will retain some discoloration.
You may like it a little better with some camo.
Mineral spirits.... gas.. solvents, how about lighter fluid on your nice JB. I have seven reels spooled with JB. No way fuel is going on my line until I try something much milder like cold water and Dawn dish washing detergent. What's wrong with a little oil on your spectra anyway?? You're running topshots or long leaders anyway.

Won't cut it ... last time I talked to Jerry Brown about removing anything from spectra he said 'gasoline''.

Head.......Where did you get the idea that I run topshots or a long leader? I use no topshots and no leaders longer than 4'. But that is neither here nor there. It is more than a little oil, it gets on my thumb, and it is annoying. If Jerry Brown suggests gasoline, then I will use gasoline.
Thanks, Red
Like I said before use mineral spirits (many times labeled paint thinner at your hardware store) -- no chance of ignition the way you will with gasoline - and a lot easier on you as well. Mineral spirits is what I use every time I crack a reel open and clean it for a customer... If you know anyone that actually uses gasoline for a solvent encourage them to quit it right now....

Well, this was a perfect THT experience.
A problem stated.
A self righteous know-it-all (usually with a few thousand posts to his credit) based on erroneous assumptions and/or a misunderstanding of the problem advises in more or less strident tones that it is really not a problem at all.
And, others with prior experience with the issue provide the requested assistance.
I used about a quart of paint thinner (mineral spirits) in a five gallon bucket into which I coiled the oil fouled spectra. Soaking for a few hours removed some of the oil/tar and softened what remained on the line. I then pulled the line through a terry cloth rag to remove the softened oil. The line is a bit discolored, but as Redweiser suggested, camouflage line is probably just what I needed.
Thanks Red and lemaymiami.
Here is a photo of the line in the paint thinner, and a couple of a 68# hoo that was hanging out under the oil slick Monday.
Now you are calling people names and you're the idiot trolling around in an oil slick.

Red......Mine are similar to yours, but I use a single hook and 2 squid skirts over a 4 oz. slider. The head by Bigbiteoffshore.com is heavier than an Ilander and stays down a little better. That red/black has caught 5 hoos the last 2 times out.

Thanks for the zoom shot ... more detail for the old eyes.

Red.....Those are some pretty lures, and the rigging is beautifully done. Another difference, besides mine being artistically inferior, is that I use 12 1/2" skirts. I got 2 hoos, largest 52#, early this morning on a pink/white Ilander skirt combo, and two more later on Bonitas. It has been a real good fall season for wahoo off the Baja Pacific coast. I also lost both an Ilander and a Bonita today. The first lures I've sacrificed to the cause this year.
Red......Real pretty work, as always. One of the lures lost was on a double hook-up when lines crossed and one, spectra, sawed the other off. The other was at the boat when I was trying to control a still feisty hoo with one hand while getting my camera ready to photograph his antics with the other. He slipped under the boat and cut me off on a trim tab. Yesterday, I had my limit of five in the boat before 8:30 a.m. and got some pictures at the boat of the next ten before releasing them, or attempting to release them. Here is an angry fish making a BigBite dance.......
