Question Penn 40 GLS Graphite Lever Senator reel specs

Does anyone have the specs on these reels (line capacity, drag settings, ratio, etc.)? I just got a pair as a gift from my old man and want to be sure to put the proper line on them and set them properly too. They came with some "made in Palm Beach" rods with Aftco rollers and Stuart (Miami, FL) aluminum butts. Not bad for a surprise gift I know they are old, but something is better than nothing Thank you in advance to all of you who reply.

I don't know what the specs say, but I can get about 450 yards of 30 lb Momoi HiCatch on mine. The reels aren't quite as good as TLD25s, but the drag is pretty good as long as you don't get any saltwater intrusion (be very careful spraying these off or keeping them exposed to spray when running). I have a couple of them, and they've held up relatively well other than a couple of drag issues over the course of 15 years or so. And they've caught lots of big wahoo, dolphin, kings, sails, blackfin, etc.

I have one of these also. I cannot find any where that has these specs. HOWEVER I have not called Penn.

If you find out make sure you post it on here!

I've been told that the Penn 45GLS was the direct replacement for the Penn 40GLS. Here's the specs for the 45GLS. The drag settings are:
30 lb test...strike setting 7-10 lbs.....full setting 12-16 lbs.
3.9 to 1 gear ratio
475 yds 30 lb test (I get about 375 yds of 40 lb mono on mine)

Guess I will treat it as a regular Penn International 30 then when it comes to drag settings and will put as much line on it as it will fit. Will call Penn next week and see what kind of info I can get off them.

I haven't used the 40GLS but have a 45GLS which I think introduced a couple of modifications ... Alantani would probably know. Decent reel comparable to a TLD20 but in my opinion feels a little stouter. I certainly wouldn't say no to more if they came my way. I'd use it with 25 to 30 lb line, no more than around 8 lb at strike, 9 max. It may be a little large for your kids right now but in a very short time they'll be able to put it to use catching wahoo, school tuna, dorado and sailfish.

The Penn 40 GLS came out around 1989 and then evolved into the 45 GLS and finally the 245 GLS. They are all out of production, having been replaced by the GLD series. Here's a link to the parts:

http://store.scottsbt.com/category1....4&ClearCache=1

Line Capacity: 475yds of 30lbs mono
Gear ratio: 3.9:1 (this is the 45 GLS and it changed from the 40GLS. There is a direct swap out kit from Penn that basically turns the reel into a 45 GLS; changing the main and pinion gears, as well as the drag washer).
Max drag: Who knows? You can tweak the reel's drag range with the metal drag washers somewhat. Figure on getting 12-15lbs at strike, still keeping free spool.

The 40GLS had a lousy handle I thought. It can be swaped out/upgraded.

I alternate fishing mine with 20lb and 30lbs mono for light duty trolling and live bait fishing. You could proabably fish 40 without any problems.

I have a 45 GLS and many Shimano TLDs, the Penn is of no where near the quality and after loosing a nice fish last winter due to the jerky drag system that reel will never see my boat again.

I originally thought of giving it to my twin boys as the setup is really light, but after playing "fish on " with this setup, I quickly realized they are too small to handle a 6' rod and these light reels. Will have them overhauled next week (dad says no need, but I want to make sure they are as good as they are going to get) and fresh Sufix line on them. Question is: do I put 30lb line on them (already have 3 Penn International 30s and one Penn Int. 50) or do I go for 20lb line to have more "fun"?

Depends on how you fish them. If you're going to use them for light trolling and livebait, then use 20lbs and have some fun. Put them on 7' rods rated for 20-30lbs and game on! If you're going to use them to troll artificals, spool them with 30lbs, and use a 6'6" rod (or whatever you feel is right). You'll still have fun.

I finally had a few minutes to call Penn and here is the info I got on the 40 GLS and other 70s vintage International reels I have:

Penn International 30: strike drag between 7-10 lbs., full drag 15-18 lbs., ±600 yds. of 30 lb. mono, gear ratio of 3.5:1.

Penn International 50: strike drag between 12-17 lbs., full drag 21-26 lbs., ± 600 yds. of 50 lb. mono, gear ratio of 3:1.

Penn GLS40: strike drag between 7-10 lbs., full drag 17 lbs., ±475 yds. of 30 lb. mono, gear ratio of 3.9:1.

Hope this serves someone else in the future for reference.
