Default fishing regs

Here is a post from my local forum board about White House intention to more directly control our fisheries. Any additional insight/view on this?

Yes, I have a comment.

At the 2010 mid-term election, VOTE THE INCOMBENTS OUT! The only goal they seem to have is to destroy all that AmericA Stands for.

Then, in 2012, send Obama out to get his first real job. Somewhere other than Washington.

Yes, it's true. The director of NOAA, Dr. Jane Lubchenko (who works for the Secretary of Commerce), has put together a Task Force to look at fisheries managment across the board; commercial and recreational. Any changes to fishing regs/managment will be approved by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), who works for the director of NOAA. Those restrictions then go to the Secretary of Commerce for signature/approval.

It's not looking good. Dr. Lubchenko is a friend of PETA, the Ocean Conservancy, and other organizations that feel the oceans are being raped and it's time to shut things down. Now that's a generalizaation, but it's reasonable accurate. Look for some "draconian" recommendations and findings to come out from the Task Force (if they're made public) that will then be put into action by the NMFS and the Sec of Commerce.

What can anglers do? This is federal, so you need to be in touch with your U.S. Representatives and U.S. Senators. WRITE and EMAIL them OFTEN -- referencing your concern with this specific task force. Once their findings are known -- hit them again. Let them know you will remember this in November 2010 when the mid-term elections are held. I've let Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R-FL, NPR) and Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) know I'm watching them. Emails and letters need to be respectful and to the point. I've worked this game before and "crackpot" correspondenc is quickly deleted and ignored.
