Default 250 OX 66's

What is everyones opinions on the longevity of these engines. I have a firend seatrialing a boat this weekend and the engines are 2000 or 2001 models with about 600 huors on em. Not an SKA boat. Not run hard. Owned by an older gentleman who used it mostly as a booze and cruise ride. Do these have much life in em without a mjor rebuild. If powerheads had to be replaced what kind of dough will that cost.
Anything else to be scared of on these engines if compression checks out?

Great motors with plenty of life left in them. A couple of thousand hours on these are not unusual. Easy to maintain and reasonable to run. Smokey at start-up but at least you know they are getting oil.
Tell your buddy to go for it and not to worry about the motors.

the problem with and outboard is when they are not used enough. regular use is better that no use. Commercial guys that use all outboards regularly get 2-3000 hrs out of them. I have a pair of them with 900hrs+ and feel they are just getting broken in.

$5000

These are GREAT motors. Many say the best 250 yamaha has ever built. THey are thirsty compared to the 4 strokes. Not a big deal at $2.25 a gallon but if we see $4.50 again you will notice it.

These are great motors. A little thirsty but very dependable. I believe it was this series of outboard motor that gave many fisherman confidence to go far offshore with an outboard engine. I still have a set of spare SS props for these engines as well a brand new Yamaha oil reservoir oil pump. Use good quality oil (I used Yamalube) and Ringfree and you should have good times with these motors. These are very easy to service and these are not terribly complicated to repair. Most repairs involve oxygen sensors, fuel and oil filters and the oil reservoir pump in my experiences. Nothing major.

Default If he wants to buy new engines Ill buy the ox250s

They smoke a little and they burn a lot of fuel above 4500 rpm or more but thats the only downside?
