Trolling 50 miles off Sarasota in 15-165 ft @ 10 mph. A med size cuda whacked it first. We released it and inspected the lure and wire leader for damage, there was minimal on the lure body and none visible to the hooks or leader so it went back in. The wahoo have been more prominant in these an surrounding waters lately and we were hoping for a hoo. Almost immediately after dropping it back 200' or so it got smacked. Not real hard and it was over pretty quick. This is exactly what he lure looked like when we brought it in. I would think it would have to be a hoo or king and how big would a fish have to be to break steel wire with such little resistance?? sorry about the quality but i took these with my blackberry. I should add that the lure is an offshore angler lazer eye island bullet 8-3/8" long. I got it @ BassProShops and it was only $20 so is it just a cheaply made lure or a bad ass fish?
The Yozuri Bonitas cost about twice as much as the Bass Pro version - but are definitely worth it. I tried some of the BP models, and they only last for 1 or 2 fish before the finish comes off. That doesn't happen on the Yozuris.

hence the bling i painted on it. i figured a clear coat couldn't hurt and couldn't resist the chrome flake
in the G.O.M. we really put a hurtin on the wahoo with braid marauders. have had all the paint knocked off the lures and still going strong. also have had them get busted in half after a full day of wahoo fishing. i like the marauders over the yo zuri bonnita because they come rigged with swivels, j-hooks and have beads in them for noise makers. try some if you get a chance.

Nah,.... here's the answer...
Most likely a good sized 'hoo or king hit it at speed. The cheap lures are inexpensive for a reason. The wire you're using for a leader looks a little on the light side. Use #9 single strand or 275lbs multi-strand cable.

This Bonita with the eye long since knocked out, rigged w/275# SS cable, and the swivel on the belly hook replaced with split rings to make the point run down, caught a wahoo Saturday that must be at least number 25 (to go along with three more that bit on Illand Illanders over squid skirts). I've had the welded rings on Braid Maurauders fail, and the BassPro knock-offs often won't even stay down at trolling speed, but bruised and battered and broken, the Yo-Zuri Bonitas continue to bring in the hoos.
What do you guys thing of Rapala lures? There is a pretty decent size fishing store right down the road from me that sells them pretty reasonable. They seem to last longer then the bass pro versions.

For wahoo? No. I don't know of any Rapala lure that will stay in the water at the 10 - 15 knots that are the minumum speed necessary for hoos, and you need single hooks, around 9/0 or so, not double or treble hooks. Yo-Zuri Hydro Mags and big Mann Lures rigged with single hooks will catch some wahoo, but nothing like the Bonita or metal headed, skirted wahoo lures.

We caught 8 Wahoo in about 40 mins in Venice this year all on big Rapalas' and stretch 30's trolled at about 5 knots. Wahoo fishing doesn't have to be all high speed although it's great for keeping the kings off the lures when they're mixed company.

You can't argue with success. There are no king mackerel to contend with down here, but I seem to get more fish to the boat if they hit a faster trolled lure, or at least I think I do and my habits have developed accordingly. I also cover more water that way. Over the past few weeks these Illanders over squid skirts, red/black and pink/white, have scored a couple dozen hoos. As many or more than YZ Bonitas trolled alongside them. I usually troll one of each and troll as fast as I can and keep the Bonita in the water.
