Hooked up to my 1st BFT yesterday, It made 2 fast runs before we brung it to the gaff. My Trinidad 30 crapped out on me. Clicker is gone & whenever I reel up reel fast to clear the spread the gears sound like there's sand inside...LOL Is this th Norm for SHimano Reels? THis is my 2nd pair in 6 months! Will be taking them back & asking for a refund.
Take em back and get a Saltiga.
I was on a BFT trip in the spring anf we lost a Trinidad to heat. The Saltigas fared a lot better.

No, that's not normal for a Trinidad when bringing in 20-30lbs Blackfin. There have been problems with the anti-reverse (it's a single dog, just like the Saltigas & Saltists), but usually with much larger fish, e.g. 100lbs + YFT.
Call Shimano Customer Service and explain what happened. They'll want the reel back and repair it -- most likely at no charge.
Put this same post on the Florida Sportsman Forum under the Shimano Reps forum. Bantam1 will answer any of your Q's.

It's not just the BFT.. It's the combo of all the 35+LB Kings that we hook up to that smoke line ike a mofo. After 15-20 smokers the clicker is GONE. Then it starts to lockup during a fight, pretty soon it will almost sieze.
is it the norm? but it is common problem on shimanos.
on an 8 day long range trip that saw us really put the test on tackle on WFO bite on YFT and nice yellowtail in mexico, saw numberous shimanos see similar failure. Note, no other reels saw serious failure (avet, accurate, daiwa, progear). guys even asked the charter master who sells shimano at his shop and he admitted the problem is not uncommon.
for the money, go avet and if you can spring for the 2 speeds IMHO.
Im looking @ the Accurate Boss 2-Speeds. pros Cons? Vs. Avet?
Accurates are top quality and top $$$$$.. Avets are excellent reels, in my opinion they are better than Penns, and just as good as Shimanos. Shimano drag may be bit smoother...
When was the last time you had the reel serviced and the drag washers replaced ?
I recently caught a 200#+ dusky, foul hooked near the tail, while trolling for tuna in the canyon on a 5'6" Aluetecnos stand up rod with a Trinidad 40 and fought the fish for a good 30 minutes or more then released the fish and the reel held up perfectly. Then again, I have all my stuff serviced regularly.
I troll an 11 rod spread with Penn 50's, 70's, and 130's and my Trinidad 40's are right in there with em and would trust them with a big eye
So when was the last time you had that reel serviced ? ? ? ?

They are only 3 months old....
Called the local shimano dealer/service they told me it's becuase I fight my fish with the clicker on. That's causes the little clicker to break/chip & will cause the clunking.
Get the Avet Raptor in whichever size you desire once they come out. The smallest SX will land tuna let alone the MX, JX, LX or HX. Me personally I will be getting the MX and JX. The JX will be for bluefin up to 300 pounds.
Sounds like the clicker is just loose. Should be an easy fix if you don't mind opening the reel up. Find a schematic of the reel and it should be inside the left sideplate...
From what I hear, the trinidad is a VERY fine reel. I wouldn't give up on it.
I'd say go with the Avets. The HX model would be good for BFT up to around 150 or so.
You can even get them with cast control so yo u can throw poppers and jigs too.
On the Avet vs Accurate issue...I personally dont like the accurates that much. The wiffle ball handles really suck and the drag preset knob has a tendency to freeze up (this may just be my experience but I have noticed it on many different boss reels) The other thing is the accurate reels do not have harness lugs. The HX does and they are reversible, a big plus.

If you fish with the clicker on all the time, you will have this problem regardless of whether your reel is a Shimano, Penn, Accurate, Avet, ...
The clicker's meant for one thing: warning the angler that there is line going out. Once the angler gets to the reel, his first step should be to shut the clicker off, then start fighting the fish.
My buddy bought an accurate spin reel for blue fin tuna fishing off cape code. First day out hooked into a 300lb plus fish. After 3 hrs the threads on the reel where the handle screws in strip out. They move the handle to the lefty side fight the fish for another hour and the left side strips out. Lost the fish.
Called accurate, they built him a new reel with beefed up threads and gave him an additional reel all free of charge.
So he spent $1200 on the firts reel and they gave him a direct replacement and a new custom reel.

Thats customer service.
Sounds like a Company that wants to stay in business!
I called SHIMANO and I was stuck on hold for 19mins before a live person answered my call. I waited 19mins for them to tell me that, "Let me transfer you to a tech", another 14mins later. I was directed to their Voicemail. I still havent gotten a call back....LOSERS! Will never buy a SHimano ever again. I'll just fix my reels and cross my fingers. Accurate's are on the Horizon

Bashing Shimano (or any other company) won't get you anywhere. Frankly, Shimano has a reputation for the best customer service in the industry. If you posted the problem on the Shimano forum on the FS website like I recommended, their tech rep, Bantam1, would have told you to just send the reel back and they'd fix it.
Fishing with the clicker on all the time won't change anything -- those Accurates will suffer the same fate. When you pick up the rod/reel after the fish takes the bait, turn the clicker OFF.
