We took friday off to go kingfishing off St augustine. the day started with manta rays all over the beach. each ray had at least 1 cobia with it but they were not hungry. we tried trolling the beach with live bait for a couple hours with no luck so we headed out to a wreck. finally got the skunk off with a spanish mac and one small king. we decide to make one more pass over the wreck before calling it a day. I was just about to reel em in when I hooked up. as I was fighting what turned out to be a cuda two cobia show up then four then there were no less than 20 hungry cobia around the boat!! our slow day had just done a 180 and we went 7 for 9 on cobia in about 45 minutes. biggest was 32lbs smallest was 18lbs.
I agree. We get a lot of Cobia around where I am from in Australia and I say they are the best eating fish in the sea. I even prefer them over some of the well known reefies we get such as Red Emperor and Coral Trout.
From the pics they look to be exactly the same species we call Cobia.

In Australia no, they are generally considered by-catch when chasing other species. But IMHO are great eating and worth the effort to target. I have heard from an old salt that the best bait to use for them is a small crab put on your hook.
We generally catch them in the bottom part of the water column when bottom fishing for reefies and especially around wrecks which they seem to love.

awesome job on the cobia, best eating fish there is, and the pull ain't to shabby either, seems to be an excellent year for cobia hanging around during summer.
what bait did you use on the cobia?
Im sorry that you had to put up with such rough seas though...
AND he had to fish on THAT boat too.. Must have been a tough day..
Good going out there!

This must have been last Saturday. We were out there also. Had to BIG ones swim past the boat while we were catching bait. Unfortunalty we were ledge bound to see if the big hoo's were still there. They werent. A buddy of mine stuck to the beach and caught 15, limit of 3. He went back Sunday and they were all gone. Heard they were around Daytona on Sunday.

Thanks for talking to
7 for 9 means we put our hands on 7 fish and had 2 come off. not killed 7 and threw 2 back. I'm well aware of the fishing laws.
