Random Quote: If you can go home and pull a $100 bill out , and flush it down the toilet, and if that doesn't bother you, then go ahead and buy a boat truthful words spoken by my outboard mechanic!!!!!!
Before bringing a Mako in the boat I like to ensure it is finished. I've used both shotgun and rifles. What do you guys use / recommend? Please include ga. / cal. and reason for each.
Handguns are not an option on my boat and I don't like bang-sticks. I look forward to hearing what you all have to say!
I'd go with a .22 long rifle. Sounds almost like a pop gun and 2 shots to the head and you're done. Lightweight and you haven't lost much if it rusts. On the other hand, if you think you'll be running across any Whitetails, I'd recommend a 7mm Remington Mag. or the tried and true 30-06 , both excellent choices and talk about penetration!!!!!!
I am not sure if it really matters. One thing I do know a 22 does not have enough shock power. The brain in a shark is quite small and you usually miss it altogether. A shotgun with 00 Buckshot is very effective. The BB's are a 1/4 of an inch in diameter and there are nine of them. That makes the .22 pale by comparision. One at .22; 9 at .25. Me thinks 9 is better.
I've used the following to pacify any sharks that we intended to keep:
1) 45 ACP (Colt model 1911A): Creates a nice big hole, though, being a handgun, I find it a bit dangerous to handle on a boat, imho.
2) 30.06 (Remington 700). Easy penatration, in fact, goes right through a 150-200 pond Mako...perhaps too much of a good thing.
3) 12 gauge (Winchester Stainless Pump) Easy pentration, easy to handle. Stainless finish is a plus. Definitely my weapon of choice.

No.................Have you ever thought about a frontal labotomy you knucklehead? We eat them!
Tell me you're kidding......please! BTW, we do release small Mako's under 150 lbs.
It's inconceivable to you New Jersey guys to let a fish go that you can eat?!
You're right..............every fish I (we in NJ) catch regardless of whether it is edible or not I kill it. Sometimes I use a bow and arrow. I have also used electrocution if my batteries are fully charged just to watch the little bastards get what they deserve.
I ask for some advice about shotguns/rifles not PETA. Go away!

haha, too funny. Regardless wether i like it or not my dad is using the bang stick, i guess i cans ee his point but would rather a shotgun or rifle of the sort. O well, lets reak havoc on every highly migratory fish, and yes everything we ctach we keep- besides them annoying little marlin, the ruin my ballyhooo

Hey Buddy, have you ever heard of catch and release?
Typical Jersey response.
We DO NOT KILL these fish in Florida.
They must be tastier up north!
No, what is catch and release? Is it a sexually transmitted disease from Miami or the Keys???
Did you ever see the Soprano's?..................We kill everything in NJ, and now just to pi$$ you off I'm gonna target Mako's and only Mako's and try to wipe every mako off the face of the earth. Just for spite I'm not even going to eat one piece.
Jacko, I don't keep them sharks so I don't know how to kill em, but I laughed so hard the whole family came in to see what the problem was. Dang funny. They caught a 780 pound Mako off the pier here in Panama City a couple of weeks ago. I think they fed him PETA boys till he puked to death.
