thorne B,
the forum is "sportfishing forum". i don't think your post belongs here or on THT.

i'm not trying to be an azzhole, but that stuff really isn't the place here.

at least you are not passing off the catch as being rec/sport caught as the first pic with the leader and bait clip still hanging from the hali's mouth screams long line.

Since When??

Maybe IB needs to post the definition of "sportfishing" and display it proundly at the top of each page so we can all look at before we post and make sure its suitable.

hey mike,
what part of "sportfishing" do you not understand that it requires a definition?
is commercial fishing sportfishing? no, it is not. It's very intentionally named sportfishing forum and not fishing forum.
i don't have a beef with commercial fishermen and their living, but i don't think this is the place for them to "flaunt" their catch. besides, set long lines for halibut often yield large catches, much larger even than the one posted here.
if the fish were caught by gear designed to catch a single fish, it would be a significant feat as hali over 100# are azz kickers, but commercial gear designed to catch hundreds of fish and that are hydraulically winched up -- woop-dee-doo.

i love seeing fish porn, but specifically sport fish porn.

ps. in light of current halibut conservation on the west coast, i would of loved to have seen the big hen safely released to continue to breed. all large halibut are females.
fyi: the smaller `chicken`halibut make for much better table fare than the larger fish.

Well Well, I think we have identified Mod #4! It must be. Because I would assume that if you aren't the THT policeman, you wouldn't care if he got that halibut on a longline or if it took him an hour to drag it off the bottom.

As they say, if you don't like what you see, change the channel.

If someone from China held up his days bounty of dogs, ready for the table, it would offend me, but I can change the channel. Not my job to put the chinaman in his place. That's why we got Mod #4.

Having been there and the pleasure of talking to these fisherman, they are equally proud of their catch as you or I with our rods, reels, braideds', Flouro's, $5k graphs, quads, 10k in tackle, a guy onboard simply to gaff, etc.. Not for me to judge whether he posts here or not, it is up to me whether to look at it..

Good for you that you've taken that job on, I got better things to do.

commercial fishing you are wrong this not commercial fishing just because it is food for people that live in Alaska
people that live in remote Alaska can long line halibut for there food it is still sport fishing up here this is one thing about Alaska Alaskans come first then all people that just want a big fish I do not commercial fishing anymore as I am a firefighter and EMS
and more people from down there take big halibut then Alaskan that one was not alive when came up

and this gear must be pulled by hand and we do not have a lot of gear down this a way of life up here you pull that line in 25# weights are on it than the fish
you guys in canada do not like Alaskan do you well sorry we do not think bad of you and that little ferry thing you guy did no big deal hope we can be friends oh I was not the one that got that fish

???? mike, i agree that we have choices, i don't agree that the best choice is to ignore what doesn't look right. burying our heads in the sand or turning away isn't the answer. the power to change requires affirmative action. A little helpful guidance and "moderation" among one another can go a long way for positive growth.

My apologies to the alaskans who are legit to run long lines non-commercially. i had no idea you guys were still allowed to do so.

ps. let's not make generalizations and labels for people, us guys in canada do not dislike alaskans, not sure where you're getting that, but it's not from me. i have no beef with alaska or it's residents.

If you reside in an approved rural community you are able to apply for a subsistence halibut registration certificate, which allows the holder to fish set-line gear or hand-held gear (including long-lines) with a maximum number of hooks (30 hooks in most areas). The fish caught are not allowed to be sold, bartered, or used for commercial purposes. Thorne Bay (the town) is an approved rural community for subsistence halibut fishing, and thornebay (the OP) is using gear more commonly associated with the commercial fishing industry to catch his subsistence halibut. Perfectly legit!

Cheers!

Chris

Good explanation Chris . . . Thanks . . . I fully support subsistence fishing . . . we have the same right for Natives and Metis in Canada

I have caught near 100 lb halibut by rod and the one in the pic would be a real back breaker . . . nice fish.

Nice!!! My uncle made the cover of National Fisherman Standing next to a halibut hanging in the Jillson on a Raised focsle longliner, they were on the upper deck behind the piliothouse, fish head a his head level and the tail of the fish was still hitting the deck. This was in the 80's.

Hey bc22, If Post a Pic of a giant Bluefin I Caught on a 130 Is it sportfishing? or because it went to auction and sold Now Im a commercial fisherman and I cant post pics in this forum??

I guide out of Craig....and let me tell you the subsistence on that island is not wasted...especially out in Thorne Bay...it is as rural as you get, they shoot deer and pick greens...those folks unlike us still live off the land...those are nice butts...we got a few like that last year and a buddy of mine got 3 60#'s a 200# and a few chickens on his skate...and when I talked to him the other day he was almost done with it...

Thornebay,

Hey there, I guide out of Gustavus and make it to Hoonah and Elfin Cove regularly in the summer.

You ever make it up that way?

To the guy out of Craig, are you a Yes Bay guide?

Good eating you got there . . .
