I am considering purchasing a new pair of sunglasses this season, and would like your imput on which brand you like better. I want them for fishing saltwater both inshore and offshore. I would like more performance based opinions not style ones.
Quality/performance wise, it's probably a push (although I personally think MJ is slightly better). The costa glass lenses are good, but MJ has a little better polycarb (lighter than glass) lenses than Costa. But as far as customer service and warranty, MJ is much better. I've personally seen MJ replace complete frames, cracked lenses, you name it. But when I cracked my Costas they wanted close to the what the entire frame cost just to replace one lens.
I can't comment on Costa Del Mar but I can say I'm more than satisfied with my Maui Jim's and when I had a crushing problem with my pair Maui Jim customer service was more than exceptional in repairing/replacing them with no charge except for shipping.
I like the weight of the costa because they are much likely to blow off if you turn around, depending on the frame. I like the 580 lenses a lot, the clarity is great. I can't speak for the MJ's but my dad seemed to love them.
I've had costas since about 1986. Many pairs in that timeframe. Years ago Costa would replace or repair at no charge. Now its a big hassle. Plus, it seems the newer lenses scratch much easier than the old glasses. I'm going to try MJ this next season based on all the satisified folks I know (that have not posted on this site).
I lost a pair of $250 MJs when I left them in a rental car, they never made it to the Lost and Found box. I then bought a pair of $150 CDMs hoping they would be close, they weren't. I just dropped another $250 for another pair of MJs, worth every cent.

Sucks gas and hauls ass!
One step ahead and you are a genius, two steps ahead and you are a misfit.
I use MJs. I wear bifocals and they actually have progressive bifocals in a wrap around style. Only ones I could find like that. the only suggestion I would make would be to get the grey lense. I got the brown or bronze lenses and as a result I can see my sonar/GPS screens unless I stand almost directly in front of them. If I stand to the side of the screen too far it is almost like standing to the side of an old school projection screen TV, the screen goes black.
Between MJ and CDM, MJ by far IMO. If you are open to other options, I agree with Ocean Waves for the money. Are OW better than MJ from a functionality standpoint?....I don't think so, but I think they are very close and for the money, OW are very hard to beat and I am very impressed with their polarization.
For Poly Lenses the MJ's are better, but Costa 580 Glass lenses are the best, IMO. Depends on what you are looking for. I wear contacts and my MJ's did not do enough to keep the wind out of my eyes, so I bought some the Costa's.
I have both the Costas and Mauis but prefer the Mauis. I bought the Costas to try when I sent my two pair of Mauis back for repairs.( I am rough on sun Glasses!!) I just like the lenses and feel of the Mauis. By the way Maui didnt charge me anything for the repairs. They put new lenses in both pairs and new arms on one pair..... Cudos to Maui Jims....Mark
We have had Maui Jims for over 10 years and like them We have even returned a pair or two and the service is great. Thanks for posting this, I need to call them and get some new nose guards, mine have worn away.
I had a pair of MJ's for 4 years. The frame hinge broke and they replaced the frames for free. I wore them for another 4 years and the hinge broke again. I have been wearing Costas for the last 3 years with no problems yet. I still might send back the MJs and see if they will repair them because they fit better and I like the lenses
I just called MJ to get new nose pieces and they were extremely nice and I will be receiving them in 3-5 days, no cost and no shipping. We did have a arm break once, they replaced it free and my wife broke hers after we got back from Isarel and we paid only half the price for a new pair. Great Company
