Default Power Pro to Top Shot Connection

Fished Wednesday and had a Power Pro / Mono Top Shot connection failure after having a large tuna on for over an hour. The knot I used for the connection was an Albright with locks on either end (mono and P Pro). It looked as if the Power Pro cut through the Mono? The Power Pro was 150# and the Mono was 100#. Does anyone know of a better connection? Also how would you loop the end of the power pro to accomodate a wind on leader? Thanks

if it is hollow core - obviously a splice would be best, but I assume it is solid braid.
The best, and most streamlined way to connect any solid braid to any type of monofilament is called the "Sebile Knot" its almost like a whipping.

I feed my power pro through a sleave of dacron and use it as a cushion protector.

A good option is to bimini the end of the power pro and use the doubled line in a simple uni to uni knot with the mono. Then the two are similar diameters and you will have less likelyhood of cutting through the mono...

If you tie it right it won't let you down. Passes through the eyes easily too.

I do double the spectra when making the uni loop on 80#+ leader, although no bimini.

I'll second the Red Phillips knot. There are several other good methods, but I've not found one any better than the Red Phillips.

Personally I use Bimini's on both ends of the top shot (ie. short Bimini in the mono, and short Bimini in the PP) as I like the redundancy of both lines being doubled.

Then when I go to add the leader I also use the Red Phillips by tying a Bimini in the PP before I tie it onto the doubled over mono leader.

Once you have tied a few you discover that they are quite easy to tie and the more you tie the smaller and neater your knots will become - and on the leader end there's no hassle with trying to get the mono up into the center of a braided line.

Why not try a small Spro wind-on swivel. You can put a Palomar on each end and basically not worry about it.

Default RE: Power Pro to Top Shot Connection

Best two ways for me are:

1) Knot connection:

made a regular 25 or 30 turns and 20 inches long bimini twist in the PP and then made a figure 8 knot (double overhand knot) in the 100 lb mono, pass the pp bimini loop in the two holes of the mono figure 8 knot and pull and tighten the mono over the pp bimini loop right where the bimini knot end, then start doing half hitch knots with the pp bimini loop over the 100 lb mono maybe 6 or 8 then the reverve knot to end the knot same way you end the regular bimini twist in the fishing line,

this conection its really good and easy for your rod guides, we use this knot to connect the 20 lb test line class tippet to the 100 or 130 lb mono shock leader for the hooks for sailfish fly fishing,

this knot its almost like the SLIM BEAUTY KNOT but instead only use the reversed knot we added the half hitches before the reversed knot:

http://www.midcurrent.com/articles/knots/slim_beauty.aspx

2) loop to loop connection

bimini in the pp and dacron wind on loop in the 100 lb mono, like a loop to loop top shot connection,

made a 4 ft long wind on 130 lb dacron loop, splice ( passing the mono inside of the dacron) the 100 mono in to the dacron loop and made the floss chinese finger splice over the dacron right over you see the mono and dacron conecction , and you will have a 100 or 150 or 250 ft wind on leader wich will be your 100 lb top shot,

all of us think about how the pp or spectra bimini loop can cut the dacron loop or the bimini loop on your top shop loop to loop connection by the difference in diameters, but allways its a solution, and this is a very easy way to avoid this:

we call this kont the DOUBLE LOOP BIMINI wich is a bimii with 2 loops instead just one, and two loops mean more diameter in the pp or spectra loop and this help to prevent the pp cut he top shop loop,

check this,

i used a rope for easy view fo what i am talking about,

Start with a regular bimini with your pp or spectra, making the 30 turns and making the biminithen we made the firts halfhitch passing the tag end line in middle ofthe 2 lines of the bimini loop and then we made 3 or 5 half hitchesover the 2 lines of the bimini loop here we stop to made the doubleloop;

take the bimini knot with your left hand and take the bimini loop withyour right hand and put the end of the bimini loop where the base ofthe last halfhitch is and pass the tag end line in the bimini loop;remember to put the line or the new loop where you put the line to makethe bimini to hold the new double loop to keep pression or tight to dothe knot,

Holding the bimini loop end right where the line came out of the lasthalfhitch hold it with your left thumb and index finger then made withthe tag end line a halfhitch over the new 4 lines loop or new doubleloop;

Depending what spectra your using (diameter) here in this step you cando another double loop and you will get a 4 lines bimini loop toprevent the spectra loop cut the mono line loop in your loop to loopconnection, we used this not to conect 50 lbs spectra to a 30 line loopto loop with a bimini in each end ofcourse the double loop bimini inthe spectra side,

after made 3 or 5 halfhitch over the 4 lines of the new loop do the reverse knot to end the knot;

And this is the result a bimini with 4 lines loop or double loop,

Make sure to keep tension when you tie this knot like when you aretaying a regular bimini to get the 2 loop with the same size o longer,

sorry for my english

suerte,

Guys, thanks for taking the time to respond with all of the advice, photos, and illustrations. It looks like I will be doing some practicing today and re-rigging my rods. You have definitely provided me with some good alternatives here!

I found the "sebile knot" on youtube. there they call it "gt knot"!
It looks complicated, but with a little practice - no proplem
I found it to be the next best thing to a splice, and I believe it s a 100% connection.

Have been playing around with knots the past couple of days. The red phillips knot is extremely easy and quick to tie. The holding power seemed substantial. I could not really find any fault with it. It seems like the easiest knot to connect Power Pro and Larger diameter Mono. Have any of you used this knot with fish in the 150-200lb. range? Just curious if it held up under that much strain over the duration of a long battle? I pulled extremely hard on both sides of the knot with no failure.
