Default Planner rod reel

I have a custom bent butt planner rod with a Penn 80. The reel is old and I purchased it on ebay. Had it serviced and new washers put in, so it's in good mechanical shape.

Problem : Full drag to hold the 24 planner, it will not go into free spool to trip the planner. Backing off the drag till free spool and it will not hold the planner. Don't want a smaller planner. as I want the depth.

Any suggestions or what reel do I need?

I use an AVET 50/2 SDS on my planer rod. I have also been told that a Penn 70 vs two speed will also work.

I use a Alutecnos 50w2s and it has worked out justfine. A suggestion that might help Do not fill the reel all the way only fill it about 2/3rds to 3/4s full. This will increase the drag and you can back off the drag to get freespool back. Almost everyone here uses a Shimano 80w2s. Try the above it should help....Mark

I think if you change the belleville washers from ()() to (()), you will get the drag you need while still getting freespool when you move the lever back. This is not hard to do on a Penn.

You can use alantani's rebuild thread for the Penn 30S to help you.
http://www.thehulltruth.com/forums/t...search#M941090

The 80 will not be much different except for having 2 drag washers instead of one. It should help you change the bellevilles and also teach you how to make the spool bearings spin better by removing the shields, blowing all grease out of them, just lube them with Corrosion X, and then reinstall with shields off.

When I rebuilt our old Penn 50SWs per Alan's tutorial, I changed the bellevilles to (()) and was able to get better freespool by doing the bearing cleaning and also bottom out a 50lb scale at strike while still having good freespool with the lever back.

Good luck,
Kg

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but I run my planers off of downriggers. I don't clip my lure or bait directly to the planer. I let out however much line I want, then I twist a rubber band onto the line, connect it to a snap swivel or plastic shower curtain ring, and then hook this onto the downrigger cable. The water rushing past will take your bait all the way down to the planer.

Fish strikes, breaks the rubber band and you don't have to reel in the planer unless you're worried it'll get in the way. And if you do, the downrigger brings it up quite easily and your snap swivels or curtain rings are there for you to reuse again.

My downrigger also helps for trolling teasers, especially when I have a heavy cigar weight to get them down a bit. A few cranks and the teaser is in and out of the way.

Horace the only thing that will hold a 24 day in & day out is a Shimano 80. It is a shame I have 6 Penn 80s & 2 Shimano 80s & wish they were all Shimanos!

Large paper clips work pretty good also.

We use one of the large Penn Senators for our in-line planer rig. Disadvantage is the star drag system. The drag is so high that we lose some fish to broken jaws. The rest you just crank in. The reel is cheap though and can put plenty of drag for the 24 planer. This would be a cheaper alternative than going with the Shimano 80.

I second that the best option is to run your planer off a downrigger. The drawback is having limited space and rodholders if you're not one of the big guys out there. I never trust the rodholders on the downriggers. You could get a trident to gain an extra holder, I've never tried but dont see why it wouldnt work. Thoughts???
