Random Quote: theres a fine line between boredom and relaxation
I have tried a lot of methods for marking wire line to determine depth when trolling for stripers. My reel is a Shimano Tekota 700 with a level wind. I use a level line because my inexperienced fishing guests cannot work the wire with their thumb when retrieving line and I am tired of fixing the mess they leave. I have used phone company wire to mark, bought pre-marked line etc., and all have failed to hold their position due to hitting the level line. Crazy glue and gorilla glue has not worked either. Has anyone had any luck with nail polish? If so, how long does it last? Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.
slide 3,5' pieces of dacron or hollow braid on the wire before spooling it on the reel at the desired length glue with plibond and serve the ends at each length Some people will cut the wire and add 10' of braid at the lenght so they can jig on dacron at the desired length I personally rigg to the length of line I mostly use for the depth I fish and adjust the speed to get the effect I want
I used some old telephone wire I took the red, green, yellow, and black and wrapped it around the wire line every 100' 5 seasons and its still in place

ditto here, my charter rods are rigged with (most depth fished wire) then a fathom of dacron to jig on.. then another pre determined piece of wire and another fathom of dacron.. it keeps the client off the wire and the mate can drop it quick depending on where we are fishing (depth).. i also have tried marking wire... have not found anything that works more than a trip or to.
Phone wire will never move........you just have to put a little "haywire" type twist in the wire and then intertwine the phone wire.........I change my wire every 3-4 years and never had any of it move and never broke the wire ever..........
I have to have something that will stick while high speed trolling for wahoo so I took unwaxed dental floss and half hitched it down my wire line in 50 yard intervals making the floss about an inch in length. Then I covered with crazy glue and after it dryed I painted day glo orange. Works like a charm and is very easy to see. The Hun

Over the years I have tried many methods and wasn't happy with any of them. The telephone wire works OK but can hang up while dropping back in freespool. This year after some advice from an old Charterman I tried something new and after a full season will always use this method.
Track down the smallest shrink tube you can find on line, I think it was 3/32". It comes in red and black. Hit it with a heat gun and it is on the wire forever and will not hang up.
I dunno if it would work but how bout trying the do it yourself heat shrink for wiring.
it slides over the wire then apply some heat and it shrinks and clings tight. It should be tight enough to make it through the guides and level wind mechanism and might last a while.
Might work, might not, I have never tried it. Just figured I would throw it out there. Maybe even use the colored "liquid shrink wrap"
what I did was take lengths of 300# dacron snake your wire up the middle (in 50 foot sections) then out the side 1 1/2" inches up inside the dacron. Then do your haywire twist around the dacron/wire in tight wraps take a lighter and melt the dacron where the wire enters and taper it out so it passes the guides. never had an issue, and it allows you to easily splice lengths of wire on at a later time. an old timer bass fisherman tought me this
good luck
I wrap wire, mono, dacron, or superbraid with dental floss wrapped on a fly tying bobbin. I use the same technique to lock the ends that rod builders use when wrapping guides. I leave about 1" tag ends on the floss to make it easier to see. I use Sally Hansen's "Hard as Nails" fingernail polish over the wrapping. I use various colors for different trolling applications and/or depth.
I always have Sally aboard. A fly tying bobbin can serve lots of purposes.
Another thing you could !You are using a level wind reel just pull some wire off and watch the level wind when it travels across the reel measure it.I know on the penn 309`s it is just about 10`.Now by doing this you know how much line is in the water [5 times across is 50] This method has been used for as long time in the Chesapeake Bay.I used to have a graph on different lines verse test, length, weight, speed of the boat,it was developed by some engineer at the Naval Academy.
