Default Does anyone reccomend Braided line for the Penn 320 GTI

This might be a stupid question, but I just got a 320 GTI, and I was debating on putting braided line on. Is this a good idea, bad idea? Any tips would really help me out. Thanks!

It is a good idea. Can be a little pricey though, you may want to consider using some mono backing and then spool up 300 yards of either 30# or 50# braid.

If price is an issue, use Dacron. Braid with a levelwind is great.

I have the same reel with 50# Power Pro on it. I like it a lot. You can feel everything. Just don't forget the Monofillament backing or it will slip on you...at least mine did the first (and last) time I did it.

I have 2 330 GTi's spooled with PowerPro. One, one I put just enough 20# mono on the barrel to cover it then attached 500yds of 50# PP to it. I topped it off with about 100ft of 50# mono. The other is the same way but with 100# PP line and 80# mono top shot. Been using it for 4 yrs now without a problem. I suggest using the Albright to attach to the mono backing and a Bimini Twist with Albright to the mono top shot.

I use braid, Power pro on everything from flounder, strippedd bass and even blackfish.
I don't know avout 500 yards though.

I usually put a 150 yard spool, (50 pound P/P) with 30 pound Berkley big game as backing on deep water stuff and then adjust accordingly.

Made a score at Sprots Authority when they have the 25% coupon, Got 12 rolls @ 9 bucks a spool for the 150 yards. Just re~spooled everything.

Cat O Lies,

100' of mono on top of Power pro?

Doesn't this defeat the purpose? Not trying to be wise, just not sure of the benefit. I typically bottom fish in less than a 100' feet of water.

QuintfromAmity,

I have used a friends 320 GTI w/braided line and think it is a great setup. I'm looking to get a couple of similar setups myself.

I have 2 set-up's... 330 gti's with 600' of 50#PP and 30#mono backing.

I think they work great for trolling any kind of plug.
You can get plug down quick and you really feel the fight better.
I also want to try them for tilefish on a canyon overnighter

I use a uni to uni for the backing to the PP connection.

Once you go braid, you never go back.

Really, the sensitivity, low stretch, low diameter, etc etc..

No need to put more than 150yards on your reel. One regular spool costs ~$10 for PowerPro.

Just be sure to put the sufficient amount of mono backing.

I also use uni-to-uni. Some like an Albright. I even use it when attaching leader material, less hardware the better.

When using a barreel swievl use a POLNAR for the P/P end.

In the package there are diagrams on how to tie them or try this site.

Forgive my ignorance, but why mono backing for the braided line? I am ordering a Penn 330, was planning on using 50 lb Power Pro, and was advised to use Dacron backing?

Less expensive and let's face it..... 150 yards is 450 feet of P/P. It takes less room on the spool but if a fish takes 450 feet on you I would love to be in your shoes

I have only seen it happen once where someone got into the backing and that was a 40 pound stripped bass in 4 foot of water It was worth watching for sure.

Whay's the worst that could happen, you star pulling with 30 pound big game.
I'd still love to be in your shoes.

Good luck

My brother switched from wire line to Power Pro to wire line Stripers with the 320s in the Chesapeake. I like it much better that the wire. The only thing is that Power Pro is a lot slicker than wire and more difficult to control when letting line out.

WHale- Mono backing so that you don't load up the entire reel with expensive braid AND if you had all braid it may slip on you when fighting a fish. Mono will help with the slipping.

If you don't use a mono backing first I guarantee the braid will slip around the spool before the drag kicks in. Try it as an experiment... tie on a few feet of braided line without any backing... wrap it as tight as you can... then pull on the line hard and I guarantee it'll slip. Mono will stick to the reel and you won't have to worry about the line slipping. It doesn't take much either.... I usually only put on about 12-15' of mono backing and then use a Uni-Uni knot to attach the braided line. Same knot at the other end for the Braided to Leader connection (Personally I use Fluorocarbon as a leader but lots of others use plain old Mono) unless it's a wire leader - then use a swivel.

with braided line goes the learning of new knots.most knots that would be used on mono slip on braided.the stuff is good it just takes some adjustments.also you want a full spool wether its braid or mono backed so that you can get the proper ratio out if your reel .if it is a 3.5 :1 ratio on an underspooled spool it will be a lot less

I still use Gudebrod Dacron line on revolving spool reels and haven't had any problems.
