Default spooling tiagra 50w with jb hollow core

After years of being a mono only man, i am considering spooling my tiagra 50 wides with 130lb jb hollow core, acording to the charts on bhp tackles web site I should be able to get 600yds of 130lb hollow core and 200yds of 80lb mono top shot, however a very knowlegable source says it will only be 125yds of 80 lb mono.

What do you guys who use jb with top shots actualy get on your reels, i dont want to order a the wrong length top shots.

regards Gary

Gary,
I would call Basil at BHP and ask him directly. He is awesome and his customer service is first rate.
To help you with your question, I have a Penn 50VSW and it has 600yds of 130lb JB on it with a 200yd topshot of 80lb Momoi HiCatch. The spool is pretty fool, but ok. If you use a long windon leader as well as the topshot, then it may be a little too tight on the spool, but if you are just going to have a short leader with your topshot, then you should be ok. I know the 50VSW is not the same as the Tiagra, but it will help you compare.

good luck,
Kg

You could also send your reels in to Basil. He really is great to deal with. He can email you a label to put on your box and you will get a cut rate you UPS!

Gmack has it right there......I did not even think about that. I have sent all my reels to Basil to do. You need to load the spectra under some drag to make sure it goes on right and tight. And unless you have a high end line winder, that is not easy to do. For what Basil charges per yard to load your reels, it is worth the shipping money to send them to him. He will also put the topshot on the reel for you if you want.

Great! Basil told me how to load one of my old senator reels, and you can do it and you need to do it without putting friction on the spectra. It is not the easiest thing to do and now I just have him do it.....but I didn't realize you are in England.....I guess shipping a heavy reel both ways is not the most economical solution.

You are right in that he is very helpful. Glad you got your info.

On my Tiagra 50w,
I fit 600 yards of #130 lb Jerry Brown Hollow core and 150 yards of 80lb Momoi Diamond.

I have no idea what you're looking at, because the charts on my website don't show ratios of spectra to different length/test topshots, only full spool capacities of various test spectra. So to answer your question directly, on the reels I have filled, your knowledgeable source is correct. 600 yards of 130lb JB hollow on a Tiagra 50W allows room for 100 yards of 100lb mono or 125 yards of 80lb mono. Of course, subtract length if you choose a high-diameter mono like Momoi Diamond.

Thanks,

Hi Basil

I am looking at your "hollow spectra reel capacity guide" which says that the capacity of a tagra 50 wide is 1000yds of 130lb hollow core.

And also your "hollow spectra diamiter guide " wich says that the diamiter of 130lb jb is equivelent to 40lb momoi high catch,

I agree totaly with these statements as I know I can get 1000yds of 40LB high catch or 500yds of 80lb high catch on my 50 wides

Therefore by simple maths if I put on 600yds of 130lb jb there is space for another 400yds of 130lb jb or 400yds of 40lb high catch mono or 200yds of 80llb high catch mono (i agree if we are talking diamond -a little less, and a little less for the braided loops etc)
But as nauticalsteve25 says I should get 600yds of 130jb and 150yds of 80 diamond on OK.

But any how I dont think 25yds will make the difference to catching or loosing a fish and as I stated earlier you have been more than helpfull to me, and the reputation of you and your companies products and service among the real hard core big fish anglers world wide is of the highest posible order, hollow core + topshot is the way most serious traveling big game anglers are going now

I just think my maths is a little better than yours- only joking i am humbled by your reply

Regards and thank you
