Alaska report from Capt Rob 7/24/2008 This week I had Bob, Willis, Wayne and Noel for a 5 day charter.
Day 1 was crappy weather under a small craft advisory. Some charters cancelled, as well as some customers. It was not dangerours IMHO so I made a trip in the inclement weather. And what a trip it was! Noel busted a 265 lb halibut. I don't know who was hurt more . . . the fish or Noel. What a battle! We ended day 1 with a 265, 92, 64 and 32 lb halibut.
Day 2 I took the fellas to a remote river that is loaded with sockeye salmon. The river was high and silty due to heavy rain. It made the fishing tough and after giving it a go we went with plan B - big halibut in the afternoon. We fished an hour and a half and landed two at 109 lbs each and two at 27 lbs each (weird coincidence). Not too shabby.
Day 3 we went to the coast to troll coho (silver) salmon. Conditions were rough (5 foot swell with a 2-3 foot wind chop on top). It was tough to troll in those conditions . . . we ended up going rock fishing after getting 2 cohos, 3 pink salmon. We brought home 1 yellow eye rockfish and did catch and release on (at least) 20 monster ling cod in the 30-45 lb class.
Day 4 we went halibut fishing again and it didn't take long. By 9:00 am we had a 163, 103, 68, and 56 lb halibut in the box. We went to Elfin Cove to eat lunch but the cook was getting an hour long massage . . . oh well. We went and made fresh bait for the next day. Two sabikis brought up 204 "candy bar" herring in about half an hour!
Day 5 was a half day for us and only Wayne and Noel went out. We had some fun as this was to be catch and release due to the volume of fish they already had . . . we released 17 halibut and kept 2 eaters to help out "less fortunate" anglers. 56 and 43 lbs.
Go big or go home!
