If you want to look up some names go the search option and put in Kona you will get a few threads on this. You can also read a previous quote from me on not to fish on the Mariah! There are quite allot of good boats in Kona, I have not been there in 7 years so I can not really give you allot of info but I know that if Kevin Nakamura is still running the Northern Lights that is a good option.

Go to bloodydecks.com and they have a sticky that focuses directly on this issue. Each person has their favorites as do I so it all depends on price and performance and how awesome the skipper is. Lots of good info over there.

There are lots of captains to choose from in Kona and many of them are really good.

However last week I fished with Captain Russ Nitta on Lepika and I have never seen anyone work so hard for fish. I have fished quite a bit, and I have my own boat in Kauai, but last friday's charter with Russ was one of the best days I have ever had on the water. Russ got us into 2 ahi (each about 100lbs) and on the way back in we caught and released a 500lb Blue Marlin. Russ trolled, live bait fished, jigged and even used a green stick to get us into fish. If you book with him you won't be disappointed.

Check in weekly with FishingHawaiiOffshore.com. You'll see who is catching what and get a good idea of the opportunities available.

I would highly recommend Russ Nitta as well - (808) 960-0068 or thenittas@msn.com . He catches and works his butt off to find them He has top of the line equipment (Accurate reels and Ian Miller rods). He's a lot cheaper than the other charters $650 for a full day vs. $850 on other boats. Can't beat that. We caught several yellowfin pushing 150lbs when we fished with him last month.

I have fished with two Captains out of Kona....Capt Jeff Faye on the Humdinger (37' Rybovich) and Captain Kent Mongrieg on the Fishwish (32? Egg). Both are great boats to fish with. My wife landed a 250 Blue Marlin on the Humdinger and I brought in a large Mahimahi. I know....I got it....outfished by my wife. I always give her first chair to keep her interest up. Otherwise, I might not get to take such great vacations.

I did hook up with a Marlin on the Fish Wish. Unfortunately, he hit right out of the harbor with three of 5 lures set and kind of caughts us by surprise. I did get set in the chair, but only long enough to see him basically lap the boat and break line. We were unable to get into position and retreive the two other lures in time.

From what I learned, any boat has an excellent chance at catching fish. I would suggest checking the tour schedule to see if you can get involved.

It is a great place to fish out of and I can't wait to return! Please keep my in mind and let me know how you do!

Broken line? That shouldn't happen on a strike. I say bad line and bad reel/rod/line maintainance. Watch out who you go with. Pictures on the web always look better than what you actually get. Russ Nitta's boat the Lepika is in tip top shape as is his tackle. Call him the next time you go to Kona. I don't have his email or phone number but I can try and search for it on the web and maybe dig it up if anyone wants it.

Anything can happen while fishing. It doesn't make the captain or crew a bad person. I lost a 300 lb blue today at leader and my knots, line, tackle are top notch. That's why its called fishing... not catching.

One of the best choices in Kona is the Sea Genie,II, a 39 foot Rybovich. It has 32 world records, won the award for the most tagged and released Marlin in the Pacific 7 out of the last 10 years and caught 4 Marlin over 1,000 pounds. There website says it all, keyword Sea Genie Sportfishing. I fished for 4 days last August and released 6 Blue Marlin, 500 , 525, 450, 400 250 and 200 pounds. Captain Gene Vanderhoek and mate Chris Choy are great fisherman and personable, Paul
