Default Sea Magic Dragonfly Rod...400g or 600g?

Does anyone have any experience with both of these rods? I'll be using it with a Quantum Cabo 80 out of Fourchon/ Venice for jigging in 250+ feet of water. I like the 400 because it seems light enough for long days of jigging, but I don't want to get into a big AJ and not have enough backbone to handle it...any input?

Woody I fish out of Gulfport. The same waters you fish. I have the Cabo 80 on a 400. It is very light. I have yet to test it on AJ's (weather) but I have spoke with people that fish both. If you want a rod strictly for AJ's and tuna go with the 600.I chose the 400 so I could jig all day and fish for different species like Cobia, Snapper and grouper. I think its a better all around rod. Remember with a 600 you will not get the action on the smaller jigs. Pm me if you like. I see you are from Baton Rouge. So am I. Lived there for 22 years.

Thanks chuck, I'm not from Baton Rouge, just about to finish up school here. A majority of the time, we jig for snapper and similar species. This will be my main jigging setup though, so I will often tackle amberjack, and hopefully the occasional school sized tuna, and I just don't want the 400 to be too light. I may get the 400 anyway, and if that turns out to be too light get the 600 with a different reel. You can never have too many, right?

Guys, are the Sea Magic DragonFly rods supposed to be superior to Shimano Trevala jigging rods?

Superior is probably all relative. I have three Trevalas now and I do really like them, but it seems the Dragonfly rod (at least the 400) is light enough to not wear you out after a full day of jigging. I'm usually a little beat after using my Trevala's all day, and I want to try out some new toys.

Reading this thread is gonna cost me about $300 bucks real soon. Those are nice looking rods. I especially like the gimbals on the 400 and 600 models.

The trevala has no backbone compared to a sea magic. I bought one, played around with it and sold it before I even pulled the tags off. I cant see a trevala pulling an AJ away from a rig. I believe that Shimano does an excellent job of marketing and thats why they sell so much. They even got me to buy one! If you get the 400 ask Chris to get you the new 400 that is 6 ft long versus the 5-8 Also be sure to tell him that you are putting a Cabo 80 on it. The older 400 is a tight fit with the Cabo 80 on the reel seats.

Thanks, I called today but only got voicemail. I'll try again tomorrow, I'd really like to try this rod out next week.

Feel free to tag along and watch us rip 70lb+ AJs out of the rigs with Trevala rods. I love those rods.

I'm not knocking the Trevala's, I use them all them time and catch AJ's on them without a problem. I just want some versatility with multiple setups ready to go and thought I'd try something new.

Chuck,

I called multiple times but never got an answer, so I just went ahead and ordered online. I got the 5'8" they have listed. When you say the Cabo 80 is a tight fit, does that mean it doesn't fit, or it's just a squeeze?

I had a pair of the Dragon Fly 600g rods delivered yesterday. Chris was a bit tough to reach at first and I too ended up ordering blindly online, but then connected with Chris afterwards and he couldn't have been nicer to talk to. Rods shipped and delivered on time.

I bought one each of the 600g casting and spinning and they appear very nice. I have only seen the Trevalas in tackle shops so won't pretend to know how the performance compares, but the Dragon Fly rods are definitely a bit heavier and much stiffer from tip to butt. It leaves no doubt about its ability to handle that occasional 75lb+ bluefin or similar critter.

Good luck with yours.

Woody,

Try emailing him. My Cabo 80 would fit on the older one if I forced it. I have gotten very good responses from Chris via email. Just tell him that you are putting a Cabo 80 on it and you want to be sure that the reel fits. If you go to youtube and search seamagic you can see a video if the rod in action. Hope this helps.
