Just bought a couple Torium 30s, that I will mainly be using for butterfly jigging. A buddy of mine said he doesn't use his Torium jigging because the speed is too high. He said it retrieves the jig too fast and doesn't get any bites. Does anyone use Toriums for jigging? Butterfly jigging mainly, and what has been your experience with them?
30's are kinda big. you should have popeye arms by the end of the season. lol. a 16 spooled with 50lb powerpro on a 5'8" trevala f rod is the cats *ss.

You really think 30s are too big? I didnt want to sacrafice and go any smaller because we haul in pretty big fish. Should I exchange them and go with 20's? I thought there was only a once or two difference in weight.

The only difference between the Torium 16/20/30 is the size and width of the spool -- line capacity. The drag is exactly the same. The same relationship applies to the Trinidads. Once you get up to the 40 and 50 versions however, the drag and internal mechanics change.
For continual jigging and casting, narrower spools are generally preferred. As you reel in, you have to level the line across the spool -- that's why the 16-size reels are preferred. Shimano built the Trinidad 16N just for that reason. The 40N has a beefier drag -- for bigger fish I guess.

I would exchange them for a pair of Daiwa Saltists. I sell both, and the Saltists have held up much better. The two reels are similar, but the Saltists are a little bit beefier. I have seen Toriums with drag problems and lots of anti-reverse problems. Not so with the Saltist.
Like others have said, the Torium 16, 20, and 30 are the same reel in different widths (same thing with the Saltist STT50H, STT40H, and STT30H) . Fishing braided line, you don't need a wider reel because line capacity isn't an issue, and braid is easier to manage on a narrower reel.
If you jig a couple times a year the Torium is OK. It will not hold up long if used alot and with larger fish (over 75lbs) over time. The higher gear ratio also lowers the reels power on large fish. If your trying to keep AJ or tuna out of the rigs, you wont have muchof a chance with a Torium/Trevella setup, the Trevella has no backbone to add pressure on a hot fish !
i have to disagree with you ffiisshh. the technique is different, you have to learn to "short stroke". i can whip a 75lb bluefin in 10 minutes with this setup and there are some captains on here who do it quicker. the action of the trevala f is slower meaning the power is closer to the handle

I use the torium 20 matched with a tallus rod and have been using it for 4 years with no problems. I did however upgrade the drags as soon as i got it.
I chose the 20 for a few reasons. I am not a big guy so i wanted somthing a bit smaller but still wanted some line capasity.. The 20 will hold 500+ yards of 50lb braid. i have never even come close to seeing the bottom of the spool on SBFT ..I also like to use this setup cod fishing. When you start fishing deep it is nice to have the high speed retrieve.
There are better setups out there and even some that were designed for butterfly jiging but for what it is worth the torium and tallus set up work just fine for me for the $$
shhhhh about the cod fishing uses. geesh. youre giving away tons of secrets. if people put away the pool cues and 4/0 senators they would fish longer and catch more fish which would mean less fish for me.

No backbone? Obviously you have never used a trevella rod. I whipped some serious fish on Trevella rods and that always have had tons of lifting power to be had.
We use the Torium 30 on the Trevalla jigging rod....we love it, it's a great combo!! We have caught Tuna, Snapper, AJ, Grouper, and Lemons on it and have never had a problem, and I have to agree with jboos1 they have plenty of backbone to whip fish!!

I've had a Trevala tip bend to the rod seat. At such point, the line will rub the foregrip. So, I think it could use a little more backbone, too.
